OS Roundtable: The 2K and NFL Are Back Together, What Do You Expect?

The 2K and NFL are back together. Even though it's just "non-simulation" for now, what do...

It's better to have 2K back in some capacity with the NFL than not at all.  I do wonder if the rumors of an XFL game got the NFL to cut a deal with 2K Sports though?  Hard to refuse to give someone any license and also ask them to NOT create a videogame for another football league.  Or maybe the NFL wants to create a bidding war between 2K and EA?  All of the above?

In any event, things just got way more interesting in the world of videogame football.

Variety is the spice of life, but, this isnt the same 2K from 15 (15!!?!) years ago. hell, its not the same 2K from 5 years ago.  Anything will be better than the incredibly stagnant Madden but my interest in a non-sim football game is almost zero.

Until we figure out exactly what “non-sim” means, hard to even know.

I don’t think 2K will take this lightly, this is a huge opportunity and I’m sure it won’t be wasted.

On-board with this.. We need more information. Also agree that 2k will take this as seriously as they are allowed to. What I mean by that is, we don't really know exactly what the terms of the agreement are. Are we looking at a situation where they have to keep their distance from the standard football experience, or is it less specific. Obviously we aren't looking at a day 1 madden competitor in terms of "what you see on sunday".. but right now we don't know if we are going to get something like 3 on 3 nfl blitz, or maybe something we can work with like a backbreaker sort of game.

Re: OS Roundtable: The 2K and NFL Are Back Together, What Do You Expect?

I see way too much hype. We know literally nothing at this point besides it won’t be a “sim game”.

              3 on 3, 5 on 5, 7 on 7 isn’t football to me. I’m also not looking for a casual experience.

Is it really gonna be a 2k if it doesn’t have tiered play calling on defense? What made 2k great was that it was real football while madden was video game football. Are they just going to give us a shell of 2k?

Also everyone is so hyped up about the exclusive deal ending in 2021, but this has happened in the past and EA renewed it.

I for sure will be checking here every day for some news on what they are going to give us.

I would hope that it's essentially the Super Mega Baseball of the NFL. Take 2K's football engine, but make cartoony versions of the NFL players to get around the "sim" label. The game would play as a realistic version of football, but the visuals would keep it from being full-on simulation football.

I would be completely happy if this is the case. Absolutely love SMB (played it last night actually). The core gameplay itself is a ton of fun and plays like a baseball game. It just doesn't look real, and therefore isn't "sim".

While that concept sounds ideal in this situation, I'd imagine they are working with the NFL per the deal they have arranged, just like EA does. It may not be as simple as "bending the rules" to get as close as possible, if the agreement turns out to be, in simple terms, "stay away from the simulation experience all together".

Maybe I'll pick it back up later, but this lost me at the first 'Is Madden even sim?' response. Was hoping for a serious discussion rather than just rehashing the rose-colored glasses kool-aid bath that discussions around this topic have become.

I get the desire for optimism, but there's a pretty big vacuum with regards to any objective discussion about what this could be.

I know you are talking about me, so let me clarify my statement.

As I said, Madden tries to be sim. The question of is it sim isn't easy to answer in my opinion. There are a lot of things in Madden that just don't make it a complete simulation. The challenge system is broken, there are huge issues with AI, play calling is limited as far as setting up tier's for the defense, player progression could be better. Among other things.

Anyway, what I said is not bashing Madden. I like Madden It's a solid game of football. But in just my own opinion, I don't think the game is as sim as it could be.

I dismissed it as soon as I saw "non-simulation". And I'm shocked folks are this excited. What made 2K great was it's SIMULATION of football.

Re: OS Roundtable: The 2K and NFL Are Back Together, What Do You Expect?

Even if it WAS sim, it's been too long for me to care anymore - I was one of the first people with a copy of 2k8 (which was in 2007) and that was cool and I played it alot, but that was 13 years ago - 14 by the time anything 2k comes out. 2k5 was my fav football game for sure... BUT...

Too little too late, EA screwed an entire generation out of videogame football options. Madden was never my cup of tea and I did give it multiple chances - I think I bought 3 over the years.

I also think most major sports have hit a wall when it comes to videogame representations. I think the bar is moved less and less each year for each franchise. So with this in mind I'm actually guessing I won't even care - sad but true.

Finally, I actually lost love for the NFL around I think 2012? I think that's when the passing became overstated and you had mid-tier QB's smashing Dan Marino's record for passing yards in a single season and have the death of star RBs (for the most part) and FB's largely extinct. It's a different game now, and one I'm not really that into and therefore not into simulating pro football in it's current state either.
