Interesting if true about 2k. If they were planning to release holiday time frame, that would be a lot later than I expected. I expected them to want to release before Madden, not in the middle of season. I can see NFL wanting 2k to release prior to season to maximize sales and 2k probably wanted to do it as the season is heating up. But, I think the NFL season isn't long enough to release mid-season. Releasing in November, would only really give you 2 months in season and a lot of casuals only play during the season. For me, I always felt that if I wanted to buy Madden, Black Friday would be too late in season to buy it. It's a different thing for me to wait until Black Friday to buy 2k because its still very early in season.

Also about the ESPN thing. I do think they want a bigger presence in sports games besides just having the ESPN personalities in the game in social media sections. But most sports games now, rather just have their own broadcasts nowadays. 2k pretty much has their own version of TNT broadcast with their personalities. The original EA ESPN deal ended and I always expected them to renew it. I can see ESPN wanting a bigger presence in EA Sports games because outside of a few games, it was mainly used as marketing.

It seems logical from a NFL standpoint. That said, it seems that 2K probably has a better feel from the general gaming perspective.

NFL2K is still a fairly big deal and a good amount people would play it out of some sense of intrigue/nostalgia/ties to NBA2K.

So in that sense, it makes sense that 2K would want its own timeframe to release its game without directly competing with Madden. There's very obvious bad blood between the two companies so there was essentially no chance that 2K would release such a poor state game despite one being sim and the other arcade.

Though I said November wasn't late for me to buy Madden, that was usually because I didn't see myself playing Madden past the NFL season. Football is the sport, where I would play the game past the season if the game was good enough. I like NBA 2k, but not the big enough of basketball fan to play past season though I have watched it more than I ever have past few years. I would buy a good NFL 2K game in November if I felt could at least play it to the draft.

You don't want to compete with Madden head on. Even in a year with tons of backlash and negativity, Madden still had record engagement and great sales. I always felt it would release a month before Madden. I always felt NBA2k always released too early. I would rather see it release early October at the earliest. I never buy it until close to season tip off because I feel a lot can happen between early September and late October.

I could see the NFL wanting 2k to release the game before the season and 2k probably wasn't ready, so they pushed it until next year. But, I do see NFL getting their way and 2k release before the 2022 season. 2k will likely stay on the NFL's good side

Truthfully the 2K game will almost 100% be like the Yard/neighborhood they do in NBA.

Madden knew they had to drop a mode like that before 2k entered, it also allows 2k to be 'arcade' but still play well enough to get people to convert. It's also the easiest way to get people to shell out serious cash regarding cosmetics and such.

2k knows in order to pry that license away from EA they need to be able to go 'we can make x amount from an arcade title with a few modes' and push them to opening it back up or giving it to them outright. NFL sharing the license is 100% about putting pressure on EA, they're tired of hearing about the BS and its a corporate way to say put up or shut up.

I'm expecting an NFL street level franchise mode but I think that's about it. I'm excited for this game and will buy it day one just to have something new to play.

What 2K should do is get on board with the USFL and make a sim football game for that league.

The delay tells me they are serious about this game
WWE Battlegrounds you can tell they rush the game because it's arcade and not gonna sell as much

They can't make a sim game. No matter the league.

They can make a sim non NFL game. EA doesn't hold exclusive licenses over the game of football. 2K just can't make a sim NFL game.

Will 2K do a sim non NFL game? Probably not though because they wouldn't make much money. They tried it with APF 2k8 and IDK if that sold well.

It sold very poorly, which is why they gave up on it. But, that was the time 2k Sports was dumping all the non-profitable games. They had the exclusive third party license for MLB and couldn't compete with the Show, and they dropped. That was the time, they put their focus primarily on NBA 2k.

I'm not sure the market is big enough for a non-licensed sports game. Even if the game is good and well-regarded, it won't likely sell well. Causal fans wants to play with players they know. While they're was uproar about EA acquiring Metalhead, if EA Sports can get the MLB license, that would do wonders for the Super Mega Baseball series.

I just think with the disdain towards Madden and 2k5 nostalgia, it leads to a lot of false hope towards the next 2k football game. It's like a lot are trying to think up loopholes that can allow 2k to create a simulation game. For NFL to open up the sim license, 2k would need to hit the ground running with their new NFL game or they will need EA to not hit the sales Benchmark to unlock the extra year of the contract. Unless it was a unachievable sales mark, Madden will likely hit that number and if Madden hits that number, the chance of the license opens up drops immensely. So, 2k needs to hit the ground running and sale well. So, I don't mind them delaying until next year to get the game right.

The USFL was a success in the 80’s and would have continued to be so had they not tried to move to a fall schedule and go head to head with the NFL. They won’t make that mistake again.

With sports betting and fantasy football being so big, there’s no reason to believe it won’t be even better this time around. This would be a great opportunity for 2K to take advantage of the video game side.

I wonder where 2K5s first person view in an otherwise "simulation" football stands in all this. I fully expect an NFL Playgrounds game or something MyPark centric with maybe 7 on 7 with NFL uniforms. First person games are the standard now though and sports games still havent tackled it yet. I'd love to see if 2K could refine the mechanic and make for something really unique in the sports games space.

I think this might have been, assuming I'm hitting anywhere close to the mark, a reasonable strategy for shooting @ a winter launch.

Yeah, Hype is dying down, but what is Madden selling for during the holidays? IIRC usually it's pretty reasonable. I imagine EA makes most of their cake off of MUT during that time with tons of new cards and promotions as well.

What is going to be the price point for NFL 2K22? How many people would decide to spend their money on a fresh new NFL product instead of MUT? Could 2K leverage weakening holiday sales to show weakness on EA's part to the NFL?

I think the gentleman's speculation in the video about the possibility of EA being in the NFL's ear is interesting. It is clearly in the best interest of EA to see what 2K is going to present before or at the same time as their product drops.

I hadn't heard about the USFL 2022 plans. The XFL is also working toward a relaunch, so how crazy would it be to have TWO spring football leagues in 2022? How much overlap in regards to locations might happen? Is there enough interest for ONE, let alone TWO leagues to survive and thrive?

I'd like to see at least one of them succeed and get 2K Sports to create a videogame for them. It could be the simulation game the NFL won't let them do.

The USFL is relaunching in 2022, four decades after the spring football league's short-lived run that featured such stars as Reggie White, Herschel Walker, Steve Young and Jim Kelly, as well as future President Donald Trump as an owner.

By November, Madden goes 50% off and pretty much stays there. They profit heavily off Microtransactions after then. While November still feels late for me, I wouldn't buy Madden until then unless I'm 100% certain about it.

Not sure if NFL will allow reduced price at launch just because 2k5 launching at 19.99 was one of the reasons NFL wanted an exclusive license. With most consumers, lesser price means lesser quality. NFL is all about maintaining a premium brand. Lowest, I would se is $50 because that was the trend for Next gen games last year that wasn't grand on scale.

                                Sadly, that's a negative.

However, 2K Games’ new deal with the NFL doesn’t mean that it will be able to once again produce a competitor to Madden NFL. The announcement from the NFL and 2K Games makes it clear that the company will produce “non-simulation football game experiences.” Fans hoping for a revival of the NFL 2K series to go along with the popular NBA 2K and WWE 2K franchises will surely be disappointed by that.
