Re: Edgerrin James has my respect
Get over yourself P2K.
You come into this thread whining about people's views on "The U". The football program created that brand and marketed it to no end.
Not only have others in this thread agreed, but there are articles referenced as well.
No one is saying that's how they are perceived now (mostly because they haven't been winning much lately) but that's how they were perceived during their run and a good number of the players they produced.
"Thug" may have been a poor choice of words but it is synonomous with "punk" to me.
And yes.....Shockey, Winslow, McGahee, even Michael Irvin, and countless others fell into that category.
As soon as an article is written about Jeremy Shockey running into burning buildings and saving babies on the weekends then I'll likely change my tune about him too. Until then I'll just have to go off of his (and his former teammate's) track records.Comment

Re: Edgerrin James has my respect
Thank God for SI Vault.
Here is a piece from this article from Dec 07, 1987. Good read by the late, great Ralph Wiley.
Earlier in the week, Holtz had said that the Hurricane players "aren't afraid of the FBI, the police or the opposition." Somehow, according to Blades, this comment was translated in type on the scouting reports given to the Hurricanes as: " Miami is a team of plantation boys, white trash and criminals." Those 'Canes sure can take umbrage out of thin air. "When guys come to your backyard and say things like that, you don't let 'em out," said Blades. "I congratulated Brown after the game, but I didn't bow down like he was lord and master."
Imagine a coach saying that about another team in 2009. The negative rep of the "U" been around long time.
Here is the famous Catholic vs Convict story that is border line.......
This is from October of 1988. These sterotypes are over a generation old.

and so on. Some one admitted a quality realization about themselves AND someone in the limelight and there has been some good dissection of that.
This is one of the more interesting threads I've seen in a little bit. You're comment added what exactly? There have been quite a few 'feel good threads' i've read here that people have posted without what I guess we can call 'debates' flaring up...but so what? sometimes these types of discussions are warranted.
Our predjudices are the "lenses through which we see the world", so as you can see it doesn't even imply negativityLiquor in the front, poker in the rear.Comment

Re: Edgerrin James has my respect
The Canes was a team everyone feared. Then you add race and class issues then you can understand the Catholics vs Convicts madness. I remember the game in 88 as a Notre Dame fan I felt funny how the media was using certain type of language to describe the Canes.

Re: Edgerrin James has my respect
I didn't say the rep stem from the 80's alone I just gave you facts that Canes negative "plantation boys" image came a long time before anything that happen in the last 10 years. I am 39 years old and I remember how the media reacted to the upstart Independent school. The establishment was scared, it was almost like the canes was outside the system. Then when you added Jimmy Johnson it got ugly.

Re: Edgerrin James has my respect
grunt, why do you keep bring up that same Catholics vs Convicts stuff? I mean seriously. In every post you continue to post that as if it's the ONLY time where Miami has been perceived like that. OK, we get that there were some not-so-nice things done/said during that time, but as others have stated, Miami's bad rep extended far beyond that (and deservedly so). Also, can we please get back on topic?

Re: Edgerrin James has my respect
If you don't by now then it's strictly because you don't want to. I am finding more and more people on these boards that seem like they simply live in their own world and make up whatever reality they want to. This ain't the 80s anymore, a lot has happened since then. And as far as me being a mod, we all (myself included) have gotten way off topic on what was supposed to be a "feel good" story. I know you are going to reply and get the last word in, but we really need to get back on topic.Comment
