Just like any other major D-1 fball school there are good eggs and bad eggs. It was all an image that they portrayed back then to intimidate other teams and it worked VERY well. As much as I hate Miami they were trend setters and turned "The U" into a brand. It's a very good marketing strategy done by a group of players that are a pretty close knit family.

LOL, Kellen Winslow is no thug. Hell, I don't even think he was allowed to play fball until high school.

Not saying he IS a thug, but how can the general public not perceive him as one when he's throwing up "The U" and talking about killing someone over a football game, on national TV nonetheless?

This has been typical EJ since he came into the league the only problem is no one knows this. He's always been portrayed as some ghetto-banger who has no respect for others but in fact, he just has a ghetto-banger look (dreads, gold teeth, ghetto slang, etc) and a matter-of-fact, laid back personality. It's tough to go through an ordeal much like he has, but more than anything, I think he needs football this year in his life to keep some normalcy. To lose one's wife AND end one's career in a matter of months would be completely devastating.

First of all, K2 was frustrated after that Tennessee loss and said the 'soldier' thing. That has been discussed over and over. You blame it on Miami. I blame it on the traits he got from his father.

Second, do you think the same when Ken Dorsey and Jeremy Shockey are throwing up the U?

I'm not saying that other teams don't have them, but most of the time they get dealt with, at Miami it's seems almost like bad behavior is encouraged.

Not to me but for each his own. You mean the business professional look of Wall Street. If you want to talk about thugs think the financial sector not a young man that turned out to be a quality individual.

                    Thank God for SI Vault.

Here is a piece from this article from Dec 07, 1987. Good read by the late, great Ralph Wiley.

Earlier in the week, Holtz had said that the Hurricane players "aren't afraid of the FBI, the police or the opposition." Somehow, according to Blades, this comment was translated in type on the scouting reports given to the Hurricanes as: " Miami is a team of plantation boys, white trash and criminals." Those 'Canes sure can take umbrage out of thin air. "When guys come to your backyard and say things like that, you don't let 'em out," said Blades. "I congratulated Brown after the game, but I didn't bow down like he was lord and master."

Imagine a coach saying that about another team in 2009. The negative rep of the "U" been around long time.

Here is the famous Catholic vs Convict story that is border line.......

This is from October of 1988. These sterotypes are over a generation old.

                    Peace

No, really. This thread is comical. It's a good story, yet here we have a thread degenerating into a bunch of talk about "thugs"

This thread was supposed to get back on topic so I am not going to respond to 2 or 3 posts that I want to. I will answer your final question though, Dorsey No, Shockey Yes...I see what you are doing there bro, trust me, that has nothing to do with it, especially for me.

Yeah, because that's what I said.

Nice job in parsing my statement and twisting it into what you want it to say.

To all the people saying this kind of thing is "the norm" and shouldn't be praised:

it stopped being "the norm" when the guy's wife died at a young age.

Edge and his family are in a tough spot and seem to be handling it as well as possible.

This is definitely worth writing an article about, IMO.
