Re: Rivers or Vick: Who is Playing at a Higher Level?

I just realize we are comparing Vick to Rivers (one of the most underrated players in the league) and last year Vick was in professional limbo.

The question is what if Vick was as dedicated to football at the beginning of his career? He could have seen an all time great. Rivers always seemed dedicated to his position and his development is amazing. I don't think Vick playing a few games is compared to the Rivers last few years of being a really good qb.

Re: Rivers or Vick: Who is Playing at a Higher Level?

I always felt Vick was trying too hard to be the human highlight reel early in his career, and he didn't give a crap about actually playing the QB position. Matt Schaub never had any trouble looking good with that same Falcons team, so this whole "he had nothing around him" argument, I've never bought. Vick wanted to run, Vick wanted to be in the highlights every week, and he just wasn't a very good QB. His accuracy was terrible.

As I've said countless times this season, I'm skeptical over Vick's recent success, but I will say this: Michael Vick 3 years ago played plenty of the same teams the Eagles played this year in terms of quality/competition. Did Vick look anywhere NEAR this good against lower tier teams or upper tier teams alike? No. Just from the QB perspective, he's looked infinitely better. Whether that will continue to translate is anyone's guess, but you can't discount what he's done so far this season.

That pretty much sums up this whole thing. Vick will obviously retire before Rivers, and we can't predict when he will. One thing we do know is that Rivers has way more of a chance to be better in his career than Vick. People mention Vicks durability. He could keep it up for this season, he might be fine in the playoff's, but then look at the long term of it. His playing style could maybe cut his career short.

If we looked at the present and the future, I think the majority of people would say Rivers is the much better QB. But hey, everyone has their opinions.

I think this debate was more about right now and not the future. Obviously Rivers would win the future debate just by the fact that he's younger and Vick wasn't nearly as good before as he is now.

EDIT: And if you want to play that game, who have Rivers and the Chargers beaten? Their best win is Jacksonville(which is also a team Vick and the Eagles beat). Chargers also have a few losses against bad/mediocre teams.

As I said before, I'm with Rivers in this debate, but that argument is terrible.
When did I ever try to compare him to Rivers?
I was just saying that people are saying Vick is the MVP of his team, yet they can win without him.

So how is Vick more succesful in the post season again?

Dunn rushed for 1,100 yards and 9 scores. Crumpler made the pro bowl, they had a pro bowler in the return game in Allan Rossum. Patrick Kerney and Keith Brooking also made Pro Bowls, and defensively they stopped the run and got to the QB well.

Re: Rivers or Vick: Who is Playing at a Higher Level?

They weren't the most talented team, but Vick wasn't a one-man show. Their most reliable gamebreaker, yes, but he definitely had pieces around him. 5 guys went to the pro bowl that year:

In addition to Dunn, there was Duckett, before he ate himself out of the league, contributing 500 plus yards and 4.9 a carry. They had the best run blocking offensive line in the league. Peerless Price still had something in the tank. Finneran was a reliable target who is still hanging around. Algae Crumpler was one of the best receiving TEs in the league.

On defense they had names that you might not remember but were terribly productive. You had Patrick Kerney, Roderick Coleman, Brady Smith on the line that produced 48 sacks. Just for reference, last year, that great Viking line that was considered the best in the league finished 1# in sacks with 46.

Keith Brooking went to the pro bowl leading the linebacking corp. The secondary was shaky but you had a young DeAngelo Hall just getting his feet wet. And they had Allen Rossum, one of the best return man in the league, changing field position.

Price was always a bum when he was a Falcon. Crumpler was good because everyone keyed in on the threat of Vick running which helped Crumpler. That team was talented an they did it with defense an a run game.

Right. They weren't exactly the '76 Bucs as some people would lead you to believe.

I remember watching those teams. True enough, Price didn't flash the way I thought he would, but I don't know if that was all on him, Vick not being totally polished in this new offensive system... or both. Maybe it was the free agent contract, I don't know, but Price's numbers were different when Vick wasn't in the lineup.

The year before he got to Atlanta he caught he caught 1200 yards worth of passes from Drew Bledsoe. The next year he comes to Atlanta to bolster the receiving corp. Vick goes down in the preseason and with Doug Johnson of all people throwing him the ball, he still puts up 838 yards.

The next year, Vick comes back for the whole season. Price's yards drop to 575. Once again, there's no aruging that he didn't produce the way they thought he would. But I'm not sure that was ALL on him, either. That Greg Knapp system didn't fit either one of them.

Yea I will agree with you to an extent. If he was playing with todays Vick he probably puts up better numbers but what did Price do after his days in Atlanta? I have no idea if he even caught another pass in the league, never heard nothing about him.
