Re: NFL Off Topic
I agree with you on MMA. But I don't know where you got your numbers for the NFL, but the ones I saw they were worse or close to the national average . I saw this on a Real Sports piece on HBO about domestic violence in MMA.Last edited by redsox4evur; 08-11-2015, 11:03 AM.Comment

Re: NFL Off Topic
I don't usually watch Real Sports but was that the segment w/ 'Maniac Miller' - that was good stuff, crazy. I don't remember any stats from it, but there was analysis last year showing that it's something like 56% of the general population's rate of domestic violence arrests.
http://www.realclearscience.com/blog...l_players.html
So why then do 69% of Americans believe that the NFL suffers a "widespread epidemic of domestic violence problems"? The answer is rooted in how we think. Humans are prone to rely on examples and experiences that can be easily recalled. The idea is that if we can remember it, it must be important. This mental shortcut is termed the availability heuristic. A key drawback of the heuristic is that it leads us to overestimate the prevalence of memorable events. Here, you can legitimately blame popular media. Because plane crashes are widely covered, many erroneously view flying as more dangerous than driving. Thanks to Shark Week, people are wearier of sharks than deer. Because 91% of people have seen, read, or heard something about Ray Rice's domestic violence, they overestimate the problem of domestic violence in the NFL.Comment

Yeah, the problem is in comparison to their peers economically (people with money), they're committing the crime of domestic violence at a similar or higher rate according to the article. Doesn't supply actual numerical evidence, just a strong feeling by the author.
So I don't think the perception is too far off. The problem is that things you can get away with as just an average Joe, you can't as an athlete under the surveillance of 24/7 media and social media. Not exactly get away with it, but you or I don't have the reach of celebrity that athletes do. We'd be hated by friends and family for beating our wives, but not the population at large.
Funny. Athletes used to be able to slide by on their reputation. Now they're being scrutinized (justifiably) for something they probably would have been able to get away with or get swept under the rug years ago.
Good article.NHL - Philadelphia Flyers
NFL - Buffalo Bills
MLB - Cincinnati Reds

Re: NFL Off Topic
Yep it was...as you said it was a very interesting piece. I never watch it either I just happened to see it was on at like 11 or midnight and nothing else was on, so I decided to put it on. I don't remember the actual numbers they came up with either. But I think it was close to the national average.
Last week, the NFL suspended Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice for two games over an incident in which Rice was charged with knocking his fiancee (now wife…
Also gets into comparing based on economic factors. However, whether they should be compared on that criteria is another discussion.Comment

Re: NFL Off Topic
So the new Sunday Ticket thing they announced with ATT didn't change a thing for me. I punched in my address and I'm still not eligible for it.
They need to look at how MLB does their package. There's a reason why the NHL made a partnership with them.

Re: NFL Off Topic
Roger is holding a 5PM press conference today. Brady also missed practice for reasons described as non-injury related.
Could it all possibly be coming to an end?Comment

Re: NFL Off Topic
It was already known they were meeting today. Judge ordered them to meet to try to come to a settlement before he had to make a decision.Comment

NFL Off Topic
Oh I know, but Roger holding a press conference gives me hope an agreement was finally reached.
Edit - On second thought probably about the stupid draft staying in Chicago.Last edited by areobee401; 08-11-2015, 04:20 PM.Comment
