Good thing we gave Brandon Flowers 34 mil this off-season. I hate to see if we could've paid someone who can actually cover opposing WR.

He wasn't even covering Brown and continually got smoked.

I have maybe a stupid question...

If we go by the touchdown, there should have still been two seconds left on the clock. If I'm the Chargers coach, don't I fight for those two seconds?

I see seconds wind down on field goals as well when they should have been preserved. Shouldn't the clock stop once it goes through the uprights?

FGs are a minimum 3 second runoff I think. Not sure about the rest.

Thanks. I always thought it was kind of annoying seeing that clock still run down after kicks went through. I'm always like, "I want those seconds back!"

Horrible clock error by the officials after the Chargers kicked their field goal to go ahead. 18-20 seconds ran off the clock when it should have been stopped. Good thing the Steelers won.

Is that an actual error that was never caught?

Yes. However it was after the touchback on the ensuing kickoff.

Also, there should have been 8 seconds for the final play. That's when Heath Miller went down and the clock should have stopped immediately because of the defensive penalty. I haven't heard that discussed but I watched it again after the game because as soon as I saw the flag against SD, I told my friend they'd put it back to 7 or 8.

It's amazing how much unnecessary time runs off the clock during games if you pay attention.

Yeh, it was amateur hour. I'm more surprised Tomlin or anyone on the sideline didn't realize the clock was running.

                      Regarding the Clock issue

The NFL avoided another Monday night mess, thanks to Pittsburgh’s ability to drive the length of the field and score a touchdown with 2:38 on the clock. But even though the outcome of the game wasn’t affected, a mess quickly has emerged.

The clock inexplicably ran for 18 seconds after a kickoff went out of the end zone, with 2:56 becoming 2:38 before the clock stopped running.

According to Kevin Seifert of ESPN.com (who is reporting on the issue at a time when ESPN, which broadcast the game, has still said nothing about it on the air), the NFL has declined comment on the issue.

Mike Pereira of FOX Sports, a former NFL V.P. of officiating, points out via Twitter that the league office hires local people to operate the clock during the regular season. Non-locals are used only during the playoffs.

The NFL surely can’t hide from this one for long. Too many people have noticed it, even as the network that broadcast the game continues to not mention it on the air.

Uh, when it comes to Tomlin and clock management I'm rarely surprised.

Not having league employees (not locals) run the clock is beyond ridiculous.

At least in this case, while highly unlikely SD would have gotten a TD in 18 seconds, it was a local that screwed them out of the chance.

Just imagine the outrage if a team ran out of time at the 1-yard line under those circumstances and the home team won.

Just another idiotic protocol for the NFL. There's so much money riding on these games, yet they allow locals to operate the clock?

I kept the spoiler because after the debacle behind closed doors in NE, you would think the NFL would go over every little detail to make sure nothing can be altered before, during, or after the game.

I think they like the controversy.

I've always noticed it for the last few years now and would even mention it in game threads as well.

I guess the league is waiting for it to actually play a significant role in a game before making any changes, since that's usually what they do anyway.

Regarding the clock issue this has been a thing for YEARS. The NFL has always allowed the teams to hire their own clock operators throughout the years. I do remember though that referees back in the day had a far better handle on it as oftentimes the ref would huddle up with the other officials and they'd TELL the clock operator to turn the clock back to the right amount of time. We don't see that near often enough these days.
