Re: NFL Off Topic 2012
Here's the thing. Just like every other group of people, there are different points of view. I would put areas of Reservations up against any ghetto in the nation as places you just don't want to find yourself in. There are some Native Americans that have a strong identity, there are some who don't. I heard from some in the community I worked in say that they would fire every single white person working there. Then there was the majority who didn't give a **** about these kinds of issues because they were too busy making a living for their families like everyone else in this world. And many of them are doing that against some pretty big odds against them. Go to a Reservation sometime and see the kind of land they were given. See what kind of poverty they endure.
In the grand scheme of things, it's a name of a sports team. Some Native Americans don't like it - I respect that position. Most don't care at this point because they understand that there isn't any malice behind it by fans of these teams - I respect that position too. But to dismiss either position because a person has a certain extreme worldview is wrong.
Also, a sports journalist pushing this issue has motives of their own. We're talking about this, right? That's exactly what that person wanted to get some hits on their website or get their name out there.Comment

I was just making a joke in poor taste. I definitely wasn't comparing Native Americans to Vegans and I agree, that would be ridiculous.
I'm not sensitive to the issue though, to be honest. But at the same time I always see both sides of an issue. I can totally understand & respect the fact that there are people who are going to be offended by the name "Redskins". Although it doesn't bug me, I have no problem recognizing that it bugs others.
I just wanted to clear up that I wasn't making that comparison lol. I hate typing all this on my damn phone as well but it needed to be said... posted.Comment

Re: NFL Off Topic 2012
I don't think I ever said that I didn't understand the reason that Indians or Native Americans could be upset about the team name.
I said the fact that in 2012, someone is still whining about it being an issue, was absolutely ridiculous, and speaks volumes of the oversensitivity of people today, especially when its widely believed to be a term that was created by the Native Americans, and was established as the team name damn near 70 years ago.
Was the PETA thing slightly ridiculous? Sure. So was the Vegan thing.
Really don't like people putting words in my mouth.
Then I'm called ignorant and told I don't understand, even though my family is of Native American descent. Only mentioned my grandparents because my father, grew up in the city, like any other regular American. My grandparents were more deeply rooted in the culture, which is why I brought them up.
Whatever. Doesn't change my stance on how I feel about it and didn't expect to change anyone else's opinion either.
That is all. Moving on.Last edited by JODYE; 10-23-2012, 09:21 AM.Cubs | Bulls | Dolphins | 'Noles

Re: NFL Off Topic 2012
I dont know a single Native American person. I dont know of any Native American reservation in Brooklyn or in NY for that matter. And until today I hadn't actually thought of the Redskin's name and logo as offensive.
But I can understand why a group of people can feel insulted by a term/imagery depicting them in a way they feel is wrong. Comparing them to Peta or Vegans is just ridiculous.
Im not exactly calling for the Redskins to change their name either. But I can see the other side of it and have absolutely nothing against them for taking their position.

Re: NFL Off Topic 2012
That's not what I meant when I said that but ok.
EDIT: Other than the rumor about some DC Media not calling the team by their name, there's nothing new about this. It's been an issue for years and nothing has been changed nor will it ever get changed.Last edited by ProfessaPackMan; 10-23-2012, 02:57 PM.#RespectTheCultureComment

Re: NFL Off Topic 2012
lol, wasn't a knock on you man. I was agreeing that it's not an issue and explaining what happened. It's definitely nothing new as you, and everyone else who's been in this area for a while knows very well.Comment

Re: NFL Off Topic 2012
I don't think they'll ever be enough pressure for the Redskins to change their name to just the Skins, similar to how Syracuse went from the Orangemen to the Orange a few years back. Yes it's an old issue, but there's not enough support/understanding for the Native American's POV to ever think that there would be a change.Comment

Re: NFL Off Topic 2012
I asked my friend (who is Shoshoni) about the Redskins issue. His only problem is that the colors and logo and such depict plains Indians only. In general the term Redskins should not be seen as a derogatory term, as it historically wasn't.Thanks to LBzrules: So these threads won't be forever lost.

Re: NFL Off Topic 2012
Remember when the Redskins wore those 75th anniversary uniforms? There was talk that it was a trial balloon by Snyder to go with that uniform full time and change the team's name. I think the new name was going to be something like the Federals or some such.
Obviously it didn't go over very well and those plans were aborted.

I'm just trying to think in my head how many have changed their name and when.Comment

The Red Storm name change was in '94. Syracuse had their name shortened to Orange a few years ago. I'd like to say 2009 maybe?Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club
