Wow didn't know he topped 1000 yards. I've seen a couple Raiders games this year and just by looking at Murray you wouldn't think he could be that durable and able to pound out the yardage. His running style looks like he's one big hit away from serious time on the shelf.

I can definitely see that, but he seems like he wants full control over everything so he can screw it up, and he wants to treat his players like they're indentured to him. College is pretty good for that, plus its a lot smaller stage with less scrutiny

I suspect he'll either get another NFL head coaching gig, even if it means sitting out a year, or even possibly pursue NFL OC opportunities before he goes back to college.
All true. I just can't see him as an OC again. He absolutely revels in controlling all aspects of a team and its program down to to the smallest detail. As long as no team gives him the absolute keys to the car again he might be ok, but Kelly should probably learn to be a bit more collaborative in an NFL organization. I guess that would be learning from experience.

Kelly's tenure in Philly sort of reminds me about the RichRod to Michigan. When he got there we heard about all the changes in how the program was managed, and how much Mike Barwiss was altering and modernizing the conditioning program, and in the end, none of it really stopped the inertia of a program descending.

              Re: NFL Off Topic

Theoretically, a coach also having GM powers to go get his guys to fit his system/philosophy makes sense. But it exasperates the situation for better or worse. That's why I think Lurie pulled the trigger now instead of giving Chip at least another year. If he gave Chip another offseason to get his guys and there was another losing season, now they'd be that much farther from rebuilding with a new coach and players.

Basically, they put all their eggs in Chip's basket and it blew up in their face. I typically don't like hiring and firing so quickly, especially for a coach who only had one losing season in three years, but they either had to commit to Chip for the long term and take the lumps they've been taking all offseason and season or cut the cord now and not have to spend years cleaning up his mess.

That's why I respect Lurie's decision to do this, and do it now. I know Philly is a fickle sports town, but this guy was pretty much reviled. It's one thing to lose. It's another to do it so smugly and have your special offense be so inept and run out your best players and bring in guys who are good but don't fit what you want to do.

The cons finally overtook the pro's, and here we are.

He definitely goes back to college. I get that he doesn't like the extra stuff like recruiting, but for what he wants to do and his previous success, it makes the most sense for him.

We (the league's teams) need to stop hiring these coaches who think they can outsmart the game. Mangini and McDaniels come to mind on top of Kelly. The only guy who can seem to do it year in and year out is Belichick, and he's the exception to the rule.

I don't totally agree with the above. Maybe Kelly shouldn't have total control, but as a coach, I think he can and very well could be extremely successful.

I don't believe the Shady for Alonso move was a bad move. Giving Murray all that money was definitely not wise. As for the WR, that's where his failures come to play. His WR let him down. Too many drops. Maclin and/or Jackson would have made many plays that these guys didn't. The stigma and cloud hanging over him with the Shady situation probably didn't help either.

I think he ends up coaching in the NFL next year, and will have some success.

EDIT: Oh, and overpaying for Maxwell wasn't too wise either. He isn't the first, nor the last GM to overpay for average cornerbacks though.

The two sides to this are so extreme.

On one hand, there's Peter King, whom I'm pretty sure wrote this while listening to 70s soul music: http://mmqb.si.com/mmqb/2015/12/29/c...es-nfl-mailbag

On the other hand, there's the "protect the shield" corner that can't spew out the cliches fast enough.

Like most things, the truth is somewhere in the middle. I think Chip can be a fine coach under a strong GM. The two jobs are entirely different and just too much for one man to handle. If you were to believe Jay Glazer's reporting, Chip realizes that. The problem in Philly is he already had the power and you can't publicly demote your coach. That creates more issues than you had in the 1st place.

I don't know how he fares talent-wise to Murray at this point in his career and I honestly still feel kinda "meh" about him in general, but Darren McFadden is three yards short of 1000 in nine starts, and in six of those starts has 99+ yards.

It's an inexact exercise given that health has always been an issue with McFadden, but if one projects his production from his nine starts so far over 15 games he'd end up at 1193 rushing yards, which would be third in the league right now. Whatever the case, he's done alright for himself this year.

Granted, the Cowboys have lost all but one of those six 99+ yard games in which McFadden starts, but that's probably attributable to our inept play at quarterback and defense which can't create turnovers more than any inability to run the football.

Chip Kelly thought his system was above talent. He got rid of superstar after superstar in philly and stubbornly signed bums like Riley Cooper to extensions amidst controversy just because he could.

Maybe he'll learn from this but I doubt it. Good luck to his next stop. Maybe they'll have the offensive weapons in place like he had when he first arrived in Philly.

So excited to hear we get a second farewell tour from Steve Smith, and hopefully a full and complete one.

I will be taking him in next year's fantasy draft no questions asked. Dude is money. He could play for another 5 years and still give a team 1000+ yards.

I definitely agree he was the 2000's Carolina Panthers, but he don't look so out of place in Baltimore purple. He won't be remembered for his days with the Ravens, but it won't be like Jerry Rice being a Seahawk for a few games.
