First reply.
Regardless of how you feel about ESPN as a network, these people who have been laid off have families they provide for and other living situations we know nothing about. We aren't taking about an elected official or someone with high influence in our communities, not even a GM or coach running our beloved sport franchise. These are people trying to provide and make life work just like you or me. To say thinks like I quoted above or make a list of who you are or are not ok with seeing let go seems wrong to me. Guess I just hate seeing someone lose their job because I've seen it happen to others close to me, and that **** ain't easy for them or those directly affected by it.Comment

If you're really any good, you'll find another gig. This is still a tier up from regular folk getting laid off because of *reasons*.Comment

Re: NFL Off Topic
Wanting the Boston Red Sox to fire their manager is very different than wanting someone working at ESPN gone. As a consumer I help pay John Farrell's salary by attending games and stuff like that. Sports franchises are also an extension off the community. These folks being layed off today talk and write about sports. Sure, most will bounce back eventually by landing a new gig. But everything else I posted in this thread still stands true, and because *reasons* does nothing to change that.Comment

Re: NFL Off Topic
All I said was that Dilfer was next(this is no different than wwharton's example)and even if that were to be the case, he'd land another job real quick especially considering the field that he's in and that there's always a market for people like him.
I've been in that position where I was laid off(for 2 years)and let's just say that he'd be a much better position than I was, if he were to be laid off.#RespectTheCultureComment

Re: NFL Off Topic
I don't see the distinction. What's the difference between someone who watches the Red Sox and someone who watches ESPN? Are you only allowed to wish for firing if you've given money directly? Just a strange line to draw, we're consumers in the same space on both sides.Originally posted by G PericoIf I ain't got it, then I gotta take it

Anyway,
Poured my heart and soul into ESPN for last 8 years. Moved my wife and 3 kids to CT to go "all in" 5 years ago. Bummed it ended in 3 minutes

Re: NFL Off Topic
If not wanting people layed off (which you are doing so by saying if so-and-so goes who cares, you ain't slick) makes me in my feelings, oh well.
And if you can't see the difference between a sports franchise that brings people together. One that we all bound over in a variety of ways regardless of background. That we often times help fund the stadiums they play in, buy merchandise, tickets and concessions, which helps pay the salaries of the players and coachs, from some guy or gal talking and/or writing about sports at ESPN, I can't help you.
I've said my piece. There's nothing really more to say. We'll have to agree to disagree and move on since this conversation isn't going anywhere.Comment

Re: NFL Off Topic
I also think you'd have more of a point if these were $30k jobs we're talking about. These people will be fine. The lower end folks shouldn't have delusion of stability in their job anyway. Sounds like a personal gripe you're letting seep into other areas?Comment

Re: NFL Off Topic
No personal gripe whatsoever. I just don't wish to see others unemployed. Regardless of salary. I don't know what's going on in their life, who they are responsible for. That's just how I feel.
And what personal gripe might you be referring to?Last edited by areobee401; 04-26-2017, 03:52 PM.Comment

Re: NFL Off Topic
He's out.
I don't feel as bad for people like Dilfer. He should be in better position coming from an NFL career. And part of ESPN's problem is too many personalities and not enough actual journalists.
But a friend of a friend was part of the ESPN cuts today. He's a journalist, not a personality. I'm sure he made a decent living but not the big bucks. People like him are the ones I really hate it for.Comment

Re: NFL Off Topic
I can hope that some Kicker, who isn't making that much money and whose wife just had a baby, gets cut because he missed a chip shot FG in the playoffs that ends my team's season. But I better not be happy if/when Stephen A' or Skip Bayless lose their jobs.

Sucks for your friend's friend. Hopefully, he's able to land on his feet quickly.#RespectTheCultureComment
