Steelers with a bit of a surprise move - they cut Landry Jones in favor of Josh Dobbs. So Rudolph and Dobbs will back up Roethlisberger.

No matter how it turns out in the long run you gotta admire the Bears for going for the "win now" quick turnaround philosophy. I hope it works out for them. In some respects the league is better when the Bears are at least making headlines.

Quick turnaround? This team has been a dumpster fire rebuilding project since Lovie Smith got fired in 2012. You could make an argument even longer than that, back when they lost to the Packers in the NFC Championship game. There's definitely nothing "quick" about where they're at right now.

Well, alright, I would not have paid him that much. I'll take those 1st round picks.

Quick turnaround since the current regime. Pace has only been there since 2015 and it was clear that John Fox was a stop-gap, build the culture type of hire in '15. This is the beginning of when expectations are warranted.

What infuriates me in sports is that you hope and pray that a player becomes the caliber of Khalil Mack. Then you trade him because you don't want to pay him and then you just hope and pray that the picks you get back somehow turn into something half as good as Khalil Mack.

It's the business, I get it. But it's dumb.

When you get great players, you have to keep them. Period.

Until you realize you just really hurt your cap, lost the next 2 1st round picks (so you gave up 2 cheap starters), and have an unproven QB. All for this 1 season as they could have just waited until next year to sign him and keep the 2 1st rounders.

Unless they win the Superbowl this season, I don't think it was a smart move. His cap hit is $22 million next year, so the only way this works out is if they don't have to find a QB. There is a ton of pressure on Trubisky now to win or a lot of people in the org are losing their jobs. The Bears won't be able to afford to sign a QB and won't be able to draft one in the 1st round.

Did they win anything with Mack? Are they going to win anything this year with him?

If the answer is no, which they are admitting it is no, you have to trade him. They need more help and 2 1st rounders SHOULD be 2 starters on the team. They have more holes to fill and try to get better by the time they move. They wouldn't be able to sign players to improve the team.

It sucks, but it is part of cap management and unless their window is now, you have to let them go.

It’s how teams build these days. A handful of teams have QB’s on cheap, rookie deals. Chicago has absolutely transitioned from full on rebuild/project to win-now with this move. Their window is 2-3 years, or until they have to sign Trubisky to a massive deal - which would be a good thing, most likely meaning he’s panned out. But it’ll mean all their depth will be leaving over the next couple years. Major pressure on Trubisky to become a good QB and Matt Nagy to lead them as a first time HC. The NFC North is insane right now.

Raiders made their decision last year when they signed Carr to a massive deal. Can’t have two players making up what, 33% of the cap. Even when one of them is a top 5 defensive player. It goes to show how weighted the QB position is that even a player who absolutely deserves every penny of his deal won’t be able to do it alongside a QB who also is being paid.

Honestly, Oakland choked away one of the rarest things you could have - two franchise-worthy players on rookie deals with a single playoff appearance to show for it in 4 years. Yikes!

It's either dumb to trade HOF tracking players in their prime or your sport is structurally unsound. It can't really be both.

The problem is this, the NFL cap is not exactly the worst thing in the world and there is wiggle room to keep great players the team for a while. The problem lies in how teams choose to spend their cap money. When you're giving the bulk of the money to the QB and leave very little to spend elsewhere than you're screwed. New England is a great example of a team that spends to the cap very well. It's a two way street though, players have to leave a little bit on the table for championship glory and teams have to be smart enough to either manipulate the cap or say "no" to guys who aren't going to play ball with em from a budgetary standpoint.

The NHL has a cap that I think is probably a bit harder to manage in some respects but some teams have done a good enough job to keep some of their core together and keep their window open for an extended time. If puckheads can do it than I think NFL executives can learn to use discretion as well.
