NFL playoff structure is about to be changed. Under the current CBA proposal, seven teams from each conference will make the playoffs, with only bye per conference, sources tell ESPN. It would go into effect this upcoming season. More coming on http://ESPN.com.

I don't like it, NFL playoffs system is great as it is.

17 game season by 2022 appears to be a thing also. Just a couple things left to work through, may be a new CBA agreed to in a few weeks.

It sucks because I think the NFL playoff setup is absolutely perfect.

I love the benefit from having to fight for one of the two first round byes. It makes the end of the season so much more meaningful for teams who already know they are making the playoffs. This format will just allow more teams to mail it in earlier once the first round bye is wrapped up.

I have no doubt though this will pass through since it benefits everyone except fans who like it the way it is.

Looking at this year, looks like the additional teams would have been the Steelers and the Rams. I feel like they both played their own way out of the playoffs.

Yeah this is the stupidest thing I’ve seen in quite some time. If you’re going to add a 3rd wild card team, you better be going back to the 3 division format. That at least made sense because the top wild card team got a home playoff game instead of having to go on the road to face 8-8 / 9-7 division winners

But the NfL wants it because it’s more money for them, and the players want it because they can draw easier matchups with ****tier playoff teams making it in now. I’ll definitely miss the 6 team playoffs because that system was perfect, even in the 4 division system we currently have

                  Yep,

                  Literally no one loses.

All these leagues strive to reward mediocrity. Like society, I guess.

Better not be another case of the players and their union caving in CBA talks. I don’t want to hear any whining in the future over what players in other leagues make or have.

I like that only the top team from each conference gets the reward of a bye.

Also, two more playoff games? I’ll take it. Playoff football is good football.

17 game season though? No thanks.

                          Isn’t this contradictory?

The last couple weeks give us basically some play in games for the playoffs so it’s still very good football.

17 games gives the NFL 2 extra weeks, with 1 additional bye, of TV contract. 2 additional playoff games at higher rates.

Now we will have a normal Sunday schedule on Saturday and Sunday for the playoffs. That may be too much football.

Next we will find out the 17th game will be outside the US for all teams.

I like adding a team to the playoffs. I'd also like a rule where if you're .500 or worse as a division winner, you have to play the 5 seed on the road.

I don't like a 17-game season though. 16 provides a nice, even schedule with the way the divisions are set up. That's more perfect to me than the current playoff system.
