It feels like Andre Johnson had the better continuous run as being elite/dominant, while Steve Smith had the longer run of being consistently really good (and the longer overall career). And all those 100+ reception years stand out for Johnson. I just remember Andre Johnson being in the highlights seemingly every week destroying teams for those years. But he was a more physically imposing guy than Smith, obviously.

The only downside for Johnson was that he wasn't really on playoffs teams and he was a "quiet"/non-diva WR. Outside of the Courtland Finnegan scuffles, he kept out of the public eye. But he was the franchise guy for a expansion team for many years. It wasn't really until JJ Watt came around that it wasn't his team anymore.

I think its a usual case of one player being dominant for a shorter stretch vs a guy being consistently good for longer.
Andre's prime was shorter but in that prime he was far more dominant.

How do you feel about Patrick Willis. For me, it's always hard for me when it comes to guys who don't have "long careers". That's like saying is Luke Kuechly a HOFer..
For me, don't want to be like the NBA, where it's pretty much all of the "great" players make it in eventually. I like Chris Bosh, but I wouldn't say he's one of the best PFs ever. Its funny Johnson, Holt, Wayne, and and Smith had similar statistical careers. I think only issue with Wayne is that he was seen as a #2 for most of his career. But he was the #1 WR from 2008-2012 and put up good stats.

My only lock is Ware. But think Hester should get in. He might not this year, but he should get in. Only can imagine if he had gotten a similar situation like Cordelle Patterson has this year.

If Hester gets in as a pure special teamer over Steve Tasker then we riot

When you brought up the NBA, I feel like we’re heading towards that point with this HoF.

Especially when you have guys only playing for like 9-10 years and only being “great” for like 3-4 of those years. Speaking for the non-QBs BTW.

(I could be misremembering things and it’s possible it was like that for the 70s, 80s and 90s guys as far as having short careers, it just “feels” like there’s more now than any other period)

But serious question, would that lead to guys like Matthew Slater getting in down the line? Slater has been one of the top Pure Special teamer for the bulk of his career

                  That's where it is headed.

Is Eli Manning a HOFer? He'll get in based off the 2 Superbowls. He's a career .500 QB with 373 TDs and 369 TOs. Out of his seven 4000+ yard seasons, only 3 came in winning seasons. You can say he had one dominant season which was 2011 when he threw for 4900+ and win the SB. Didn't win playoff games outside of the 2 Superbowl runs. He averaged 24.6 TOs a season.

It comes down to what peoples definition of HOF is. Is it longevity, dominance, consistency, top 5 in position in their prime, not being able to tell the story of the NFL without them. Most of time, it's comes down to recency bias and statistics. There's a 40-70 TD difference in guys like Harrison, TO, Moss than guys like Smith, Johnson, Holt, and Wayne.

I feel like Slater is a no-doubter, he's been the epitome of special teams ace for like 15 years. If you make 10 pro bowls for any reason, you have to be a lock

Maybe. We'll see how seriously they take his candidacy and Vinitieri in a few years.

Slater's pro bowl numbers are inflated IMO but he should get in too. It's like interior OL, once you're in people will keep voting you in because they don't really analyze those positions that closely (See: Ruben Brown, Jeff Saturday)

                            About time.

Pretty sure his butt buddy Brady will try to keep him around. Hopefully this causes another "fracture" in a relationship for Tom.

I meant between Tom & the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. I've always had the sinking feeling that the Patriots jettisoning Brown, even with good cause do to the allegation looming over him, and not even considering bringing him back was the "last straw."

I don't care about the personal relationships involved here.
