Re: NFL Off Topic
Hard to evaluate HOF potential based on the how they vote when the criteria isn't the same for everyone.#RespectTheCultureComment

Re: NFL Off Topic
Sitting back a few days and thinking about the other side of this Calvin Johnson news. I think this is going to fast become the trend with non-QB players. You come in play for (and through) your second contract make your money and get out and hope you don't develop CTE or spend your mid-late 30s and 40s struggling to go up and down stairs.Moderator

Re: NFL Off Topic
Was really just throwing out a few names of the many, many WRs that, IMO, had overall better resumes for the HOF than Calvin but had to wait forever to get in or are still waiting.
It's really a no win situation (this part isn't in response to your post)... on one hand we laugh at the NBA HOF because it seems they let everyone in, but then with the NFL we can name a bunch of players individually and collectively say "definitely should make it" but if they all get in then it becomes... well, the NBA HOF.
I don't know how they pick and can't say I always agree. But if I'm thinking about whether or not Calvin will get in, I'm trying to look at how they've treated others close to his situation in the past, and it doesn't look good. At best will likely take a very, very long time.Comment

Re: NFL Off Topic
I don't think so, we're probably about 10 years from it happening but the money is getting to the point you can play 8-10 years and if you're smart with the money get away with your health and enough money to live comfortably.
There are always gonna be those guys who will play forever and still end up broke but there is a lot of money out there now.

Re: NFL Off Topic
Problem is that not everyone is smart with their money.
I mean does TV(working on ESPN or NFL Network)really pay that well to last in the post football playing career?#RespectTheCultureComment

Re: NFL Off Topic
I'd wonder what percentage of the league makes it 8-10 years. Can see players just on the other side of their prime but playing at an exceptional level retiring more frequently, but there are a lot of guys who aren't going to pass up the 10s of millions that await them if they continue to play. I think CJ is an outlier as a result, especially having cashed over $100m in checks.
Related, Manning has reportedly told close friends that he's retiring after the Super Bowl. I hadn't read that he told Belichick at the 50 yard line after their win that it might be his last rodeo.

Not at a pro sports level, but I believe it's a good living (and obviously more if you're talented at it).Comment

I also just heard Justin Tuck is retiring. I'm thinking as N51_rob said, hopefully the players are getting smarter and getting out while their bodies and wits are still intact.Comment

Re: NFL Off Topic
I think it's close, though, taking into account the difference in positions. He has the NFL single game receiving record, 2nd most receiving yards in a single game, 8-straight 1000+ yard years, and is the Lions' leader all time in receps/receiving yards.

Calvin's 3 years between 2011 and 2013? That was Barry's career. His lowest rushing total for a season was 1115, and that was the only time he fell short of 1300 yards.
Barry was on a whole other level.Comment

Fair enough...I think you do have to take into account their different positions, but point(s) taken.Comment
