Re: NFL Off Topic
People whined so much about TV for whatever reason, that these companies broke everything that worked perfectly and they made everyone go through all these hoops and everything to get a less stable product that's 30 seconds delayed and way less easy/centralized to watch TV. And now you can't even flip around with exciting apps, waiting for **** to load, navigating to whatever "channel" or whatever else.

Re: NFL Off Topic
They demanded "a la carte!" "we're sick of cable!" "we don't wanna pay for channels we don't watch!" and all that. So the companies said OK. And they did it. And people praised it and thought they were "finally getting choice!" No ads! Pick what we wanna watch!
And then, well, because they were constantly praised by a dumb population who never does anything right literally ever, the companies knew they could put forth the re-combination, or moving things to streaming exclusive, or whatever---and get people to keep eating out of their hands.
Ultimately I will always blame the people. The people are constantly the ones who go along with **** and then the people are always the ones who'll mock or treat with dismissive or derisive attitudes anyone who thinks or says differently or warns about the "slippery slopes" and all that until they themselves realize it and then bitch about how terrible, say, overexposure of the NFL or pushing everything to streaming or whatever is. By then it's too late. People love deflecting to "targets" like companies and whatever to absolve themselves of blame but in the end, everything is up to the masses.

Companies will do what people want because that's what makes them money.

Netflix and all these other streaming services have been operating essentially in the red, until they've realized that a multi - tiered system with ads (in the lowest tier in particular) can get them out of it.
It's less about giving us what we want, more about making their CEO's and stockholders happy.
And I agree that more things should be on broadcast TV since that is the widest reaching audience. Unfortunately, greed - the streaming services trying to increase their customer base and the leagues lining their pockets - is gonna lead to more live sports on streaming.
Tastes in society are gonna change and evolve as technology does. It sucks to have to change things that work (or we perceive as working), but that is how cultures work.
We see how corporations are attempting to get rid of physical media for digital media (which they full own and control the distribution of).

Re: NFL Off Topic
I blame the NFL for piecing up their various offerings and splitting it amongst every damn streaming platform out there. They didn’t need to give Netflix Christmas games, Peacock a random exclusive playoff game, TNF on Prime, etc. We always had multiple channels (CBS, FOX, NBC, and ESPN), but they doubled down on everything and now we have this hellscape of different services to where it’s actually a challenge even for those savvy enough to figure out what’s going to be airing on what. There were always multiple networks, but they kept that model and added streaming and it’s just gotten out of hand.
I actually think the NFL is driving a lot of what the streaming services are trying to do lately, which is having multiple team up so they can boast about their large offering for sports across their various channels/networks. It’ll give them a leg to stand on when the price hikes come again.NHL - Philadelphia Flyers
NFL - Buffalo Bills
MLB - Cincinnati Reds

Re: NFL Off Topic
Nope, they never offered a-la carte. A-la carte is hand me a list of every channel that exist, I choose which ones I want and you hand me a quote. That never happened as far as I know.OSHA Inspector for the NBA.Comment

People whined so much about TV for whatever reason, that these companies then saw fit to break everything that worked perfectly and they made everyone go through all these hoops and hardware and everything to get a less stable product that's 30-45 seconds delayed, impossible to watch if your internet dies, have to work through quality issues, and way less easy/centralized to watch TV. And now they're trying to cobble everything back together! And this streaming trash, you can't even flip around without exiting apps, waiting for **** to load, navigating to whatever "channel" or whatever else. YouTube TV app on my phone barely ****ing works without being buggy garbage I have to keep closing and opening just to get the video to work as opposed to just the audio. The funniest **** is how predictable all of it was.
Good job everyone. As always. On everything. Good ****ing job.
I'll use my other ways. **** em all.
The way things "used to be" was that you needed a physical satellite dish on your house to get all the games (assuming you could get one at all), plus a subscription to DirecTV entailing a 2 year commitment. And the price you paid in year one was invariably a promo rate that ended at the beginning of year two, causing your bill to spike up $50+ / month. I know this because I used to sell DirecTV and every fall I silently prayed that the people I sold it to last year wouldn't remember who I was once they rolled in to scorch someone's face off.
Then the junk fees, taking a day off work to wait around for a technician, needing extra boxes for your bedrooms or your den (with associated charges), paying for tivo, and the sheer Kafka-esque nightmare of trying to cancel that service even once the term was up... It was a horrible, horrible business model that people were right to burn to the ground.Bills, Sabres, Illini, Cubs, basically any team that abuses its fanbase and I'm there.Comment

This is a particularly rosy view of the way things used to be.
