    Re: NFL Off Topic

From the Broncon's "Why your team sucks" fan letters on Deadspin.

A couple of weeks ago, I was in Cheyenne, WY for a wedding. Since Cheyenne is only an hour and a half from Denver, there are quite a few Bronco fans there. I met one particular die-hard who swears up and down that Denver would have beat Baltimore if Tim Tebow were the starting quarterback of that game. His reasoning was that "Tebow would have ran for 90 yards and 2 touchdowns" because "Baltimore left the field wide open for Manning to run and he wouldn't do it." Yes, you read that correctly, Peyton ****ing Manning is the starting quarterback and there are actually living, breathing human beings that prefer Tebow. He also went on to say that the Patriots were building their team around Tebow being the starter in 2 years, so there's that.

Also, the only game I have been to in Denver was when they let Jamarcus ****ing Russell lead Oakland to a 4th quarter come-from-behind victory

Jon Bostic fined $21,000 for hit during Chargers-Bears game. Really NFL that was a clean hit. He didn't go for the head or the knee.

He led with his own head.

Allegedly. I've only seen one replay.

Whatever, this system's going to seem awesome once college starts throwing people out for illegal hits.

He did lead with the crown of his head. And college won't be as bad as people think imo. I have a feeling they will be targeting the obvious ones we all comment on anyway.

Yeah, his first point of contact, the crown goes right to the sternum. Was the only explanation I'd accept from them after watching it. Some tried to say it was a defenseless receiver before the official statement came out. Yeah, right.

And I think two conferences are going to overdo it in college. Pac-12 and ACC are notorious for calling it too much already. You won't have the ejections, but a lot of 15 yard penalties for nothing.

What I don't get is no one can explain how to tackle someone without your helmets making some contact. Since you cannot make contact with the head, you have to bend over and try to hit the waist. The only way that happens is to lead with your head. You cannot bend over and dive without making contact with the crown. You can try to hit with the shoulder, but that isn't proper technique to wrap someone up.

Yeah I don't understand how they're supposed to tackle either. I've always heard that you're supposed to put your facemask into the person's chest, but if the ball carrier lowers his shoulders a bit, that puts the tackler right in line for the ball carrier's helmet, which is a penalty.

Which is why I've always felt that there needs to be some offensive accountability. There is somewhat (e.g. Pierre Thomas vs. the Niners), but they don't call it that way often enough. There should be some leeway if a receiver/runner turtles. But you are supposed to see what you hit in a form tackle. But technically hitting with the crown of your helmet like he did has been illegal for much much longer.

Reading that Arizona has around 60 offensive plays involving Patrick Peterson.

Why would you really need to devote that much time to one defensive player. I get having a package or two for him, but to spend that much practice and install time on getting one player the ball seems excessive. But I could be wrong.

One thing that's always confused me about the "put your facemask in their chest" tackling method... If you're running full speed at a dude who is running full speed at you, wouldn't putting your face in his chest snap your neck?

Well generally you should be putting your head across their body when you form tackle. The side of your helmet is what usually going to hit them, but you keep your head up still because lowering your head can compress your spine. Also, your head isn't completely up when you tackle.

You guys talking about penalties, these are only applicable when someone is making a catch. A ball carrier (be it a RB, WR, TE, QB, Defensive player) is not protected by these rules... like Pierre Thomas against SF.

It still makes it difficult on the defender but the issue isn't nearly as big as you all are making it (where it would involve every single tackle made).
