Bottom line is that it wouldn't be happening if he didn't come out of the closet.

I'd actually respect the guy if he told Oprah to shove it after being approached.

Well obviously it wouldnt be happening if he didnt come out the closet. But he did come out, and he got an offer to do a show that he will profit from monetarily and marketability wise; the show will also let him share his unique experience with an audience and community that is emotionally invested in him and this very real social issue. I dont have a single problem with it.

It's a distraction for the organization and for Sam in terms of football I suppose. However I can't hate a guy for trying to get his name out there and who knows if it inspires even one person watching then great.

I agree.

Doesnt Eric Decker have a reality show on the reality show mecca, E! Network? Ive never heard of that being a distraction for him or the Broncos.

I dont anticipate OWN getting clearance to the point of it becoming a distraction on team property. I see a large majority of Sam footage to be of him off the field, with his family, interacting with his community and documenting how his action and story has affected others.

Other players have literally zero to do with the issue here, which is that he (and everyone else) talk about how we need to treat him as a football player just like everyone else, and then he/they go and make a freakin' reality documentary thing for him just because he came out of the closet.

It's disingenuous and transparent as hell. If he said "yeah, I'm gay and I'm gonna use it to cash in" and everyone else said "yeah, he's gay and we're gonna use him and it to cash in" then okay, fine. But that's not what was said.

For someone who claims to want to be recognized as a football player first, he's not doing a great job of doing things for that to happen.

Hmm...but isn't it different when you're an established vet in the league vs a guy who for all accounts is going to have to fight for a roster spot?

I get that Sam wants to profit from it in some ways but a TV show does seem a bit much IMO.

My point w/ bringing up Manziel is that he gets the rap for being the glory hog when pretty much any mother****er in Manziel's position would do the same **** he does half the time. In both cases it doesn't affect how he can produce on the field, yet we have the Browns owner saying Manziel should be less Hollywood and already trying to change the way the guy lives.

I'm sure they would if they had the opportunity to. He's unique to the sport, and there is a group that wants to know about his experience. I don't see how people can be mad at him for taking advantage of an opportunity that was presented to him.

How would people react if Johnny Football had a documentary series announced less than a week after he's drafted? Let's hope people give Sam that 'equal' treatment.

It'd be the greatest reality show out there. Instant through the roof ratings for whatever network it was on. I'm shocked no one has offered him a show yet.

There's just a difference of opinion here. Some people want him to just be a football player, others think it's fine if he cashes in on the unique situation he's in.

I tend to lean towards the just play football view.

It's kind of an old school v new school view. Old school wants their football players to just play, new school wants their football players to entertain. Neither is right or wrong.
