With the advantages the offense has with PI and defensive holding there needs to be more of a penalty for offensive penalties. I would love to see a loss of down for both.

I'm a Broncos fan and I think the fact that they were just able to get a touchdown without losing anything other than 10 yards after that penalty is a joke.
Offense also only loses 10 yards on the hands to the face penalty. Defense is 5 yards and the automatic first down. Doesn't make sense.

There shouldn't be automatic first down penalties against the defense. Unsportsmanlike conduct or unnecessary roughness should be the only two penalties that give automatic first downs being as they aren't football plays.

Defensive holding should just be five yards. DPI should be a spot foul. OPI should be 15 yards and a loss of down. Holding should stay the same at 10 yards.

The NFL rulebook needs to be re-evaluated. The stupidity of penalties I saw today is just terrible. If a player runs into the punter with his shoulder knocking him over, it is only five yards, but if an offensive player blocks a defensive player onto the ground beneath the punter, thereby rolling the punter up, it is 15 yards. A receiver can apparently have his head hit so hard the helmet comes off and not have a defenseless hit penalty so long as he is fighting for possession in midair with another defender. A DB better not breath on a receiver post five yards, but a receiver can slap a CB in the helmet to get separation.

I think the top CB in the NFL discussion is dumb since every team asks different things out of each CB, but can we stop the argument that Patrick Peterson is the top CB in the league? The #1 reason for those who have this opinion is because he is matched up vs. the opposing team's top WR all game long. Well, Demaryius Thomas has gone off against the Cardinals for almost 200 yards and 2 TDs. And who has been covering him most of the game? Antonio Cromartie and not Peterson.

I'm actually wondering about that since he was cut. He still had one more game on it.

              No he didn't.

He was suspended for four weeks, not four games.

I'm sure everyone has heard it but the Browns win today was the biggest road comeback in NFL history.

The Oilers/Titans franchise sure loves coughing up games.

Long winded post incoming but trying to get these thoughts out.

Anyone feel as if there is a huge Gap between the quality of play this year? Meaning the top teams are really good, and everyone else is either really bad, or can win/lose on any given day with no rhyme or reason. Seriously it feels like the best teams in the league right now are still Denver/Seattle, can throw San Diego in there too... and then it's just everyone else.

I mean Dallas/and Philly in the NFC have 4-1 records but do they really feel like top flight teams? A lot of teams are winning ugly, and there aren't any teams at all that are outright dominating. We have no undefeated teams coming out of Week 5. I guess that's what the league has been striving for parity like this but it makes it very hard to get a read on certain teams as one week they look like world beaters, then the next they are losing to cellar dwellers.

Also going on a little separate side rant here.. but is anyone else losing a little enjoyment factor in watching the NFL? Maybe I'm burnt out by watching the NFL on almost every Football Sunday for the last 10 or so years now.. but I truly feel like the Quality of play has declined from say 2001-2010 to present. Maybe it's the rule changes, obsessing over contact in the secondary, or the absurd amount of protection Quarterbacks receive from contact... feels like there are so many stoppages now, and so many Penalties that just effect the flow of the games more than what they used to.

I truly feel like I need to maybe take a season off of watching Football, or just catch highlights for a while. Never thought I'd say this ever... but Football is just losing it's luster for me; and I used to get giddy and excited to wake up Sunday Morning and prepare for an entire Day of Football now it's just like eh whatever.

You say there's a gap but then express my opinion that I consider the polar opposite pretty much: parity has never seemed greater.

Still can't get enough of the NFL, even those 'crappy' games like division matchups in prime time or blowouts.

Game has no doubt changed and will continue out of necessity as players continue to get bigger/stronger/faster and absent some miracle tech that ensures safety of player noggins that will continue.

                            Commercial ball? Yeah.

Most I can do now is leave Redzone channel on for background noise. Outside of Thursday/Sunday night games, which go on TV and don't get paid any attention to. Don't watch Monday Night games.

                                1. I think the quality of the game has increased, now that teams are abandoning 1970s-era tactics and have embraced the passing game/aggressiveness on 4th down.

                                2. The extent of my NFL watching is tuning into NFL Red Zone for the early games and occasionally turning on the Sunday Night game if the matchup is compelling.

Watching a single NFL game from start to finish is frankly a chore though. Think of how many commercial breaks there are during a single game: after scores, changes of possession, injuries, timeouts, reviews, end of quarters, 2-minute warnings, halftime, etc. The barrage of penalty flags this year is basically icing on the cake.
