Does the NFL gain more followers and business when they make rules like this?

The most ridiculous examples of the League going overboard: banning the Mile High Salute and the Falcons Dirty Bird. What in god's name was wrong/offensive with those?

The Dirty Bird was banned a LONG time ago but the Mile High Salute was ok until this year I believe. I can see the point where some celebrations are completely uncalled for and are definitely taunts but I don't think they should be penalized for it but rather it's something that a coach or teammates have to address.

Now, if they ban leaping into the stands then there's going to be hell to pay!

I agree with TheMatrix though, this is just the further pussification of the game and in some ways the culture as a whole.

As for the Belichick getup, every time I see that photo I keep thinking it should be used a cover for some cheesy '50s movie especially with the expression on the woman's face.

All they did was make it a point of emphasis that doing those celebrations in someone's face is taunting. They didn't ban anything, players are still spiking/spinning the ball too (also part of the same announcement that caught fire here for a few days in the offseason).

via the first Google result (http://www.jonheath.net/2013/08/clar...was-not.html):
In the NFL rule book, Rule 12, Section 3, Article 1, Note 3 states the following:
Violations of (b) will be penalized if any of the acts are committed directly at an opponent. These acts include but are not limited to: sack dances; home run swing; incredible hulk; spiking the ball; spinning the ball; throwing or shoving the ball; pointing; pointing the ball; verbal taunting; military salute; standing over an opponent (prolonged and with provocation); or dancing.

This is stupid. Redskins name has been around for like 80 or so years. Why suddenly act like this is a problem? I hate society today, people always complaining about stuff that has no reason to be complained about, and trying to change stuff that has been around for decades.

If Redskins name gets changed, then how long before others start trying to get Cleveland Indians name changed, and Atlanta Braves, Chicago Blackhawks among others.

Yea, I've seen a few Broncos throw out the Mile High salute this year and not get penalized.

Well the Indians had to change their primary logo in the mid aughts because of pressure. The Braves tried to use one of their throwback logos this past season and it was met with so much horror that they completely dropped it.

So it's not like there's never been pressure associated with those teams. I think the Redskins missed out on an opportunity that FSU seized by gaining permission from the Seminole tribe to use their name and logos. Now thanks to the navel gazing regarding this situation the Oneida nation is seeking to take away the Redskins name. If Snyder (or Jack Kent Cooke previously) had gone to them earlier there wouldn't be this issue.

BTW I believe the Blackhawks are generally regarded as more than ok. In fact, that logo is quite popular with native peoples.

Braves and Blackhawks were both indian warriors. No different than calling a team the warriors.

Indian is a noun and not derogatory.

Redskins is considered by some to be derogatory. Did you read the story you posted? The very people who are offended by the name was part of the group that went to the NFL.

Now I hope the name doesn't get changed but can you read that story with a straight face and blast the group who is offended by the name personally to try and get it changed???

Why would they need the permission of the Oneida Nation, a tribe historically based out of the New York area, with other bands in Wisconsin and Ontario. I am a Redskin fan so I am clearly biased in this area, but I have always wondered why this tribe from New York has a so much say on a team in Washington, yet exert none of their influence on a team called the Indians.

Jonathan Martin's strange absence from the Dolphins has developed into one of the more unusual stories of this NFL season. Martin, who is in his second season and has started all seven games for Miami this season, was listed as … Continue reading →

Mostly because the name Redskins, like Indians, or Native Americans, or American Indians or whatever term you use is a term used to describe a wide array of nations that have less cultural similarities than Europeans. So when you use the term Redskin, it refers to anybody who is native to North America. The issue one of my friends brought up is that the Redskins use colors and logos that is stereotypical of the plains tribes, yet uses a term that identifies all natives; I forget his tribe but the tribe is from the west. This, along with a the modern world view of trying to play the victim, is probably why the Oneida care.

I'm not sure why Indians isn't as offensive other than it doesn't use color and "skin" together. Otherwise the words mean the exact same thing. They simply refer to a group of people with little regard to anything other than they arrived in the Americas centuries prior to the Europeans. I can cay Indian with as much contempt and malice as redskin; which is what makes a word hateful is the intent, but because it doesn't refer to skin tone it's fine.

If the Redskins change their name, they should do Janissaries or Mamelukes. Whether or not there is hysteria over the new name or not, people might actually learn something about a foreign culture in the media coverage. Nothing like slave warriors that each took over their respective countries.

Personally if they ever change the name i'd like them to be called the Federals or something. You could try to make a wordmark similar to FedEX with a hidden image inside it.

I'm tired of the debate myself but you know, money solves everything. I'm not sure how FSU got their permission but i'm 90% money may have played a role.
