    NFL Off Topic

I was speaking in general and not necessarily about Mark Sanchez though, hence me saying context is key.

We already know the deal on him.

If my team is a contender, I'd like to have a guy who can come in and babysit for a few weeks if needed. If a rookie who's not ready comes in and throws away a few games, that could cost me a bye or even a playoff spot.

If I'm not a contender, I don't really need that guy. I'd rather have another young QB with potential.

And if starting Mark Sanchez as a backup is what saves your 8-8 season, you have bigger problems than who your backup is.

You been spoiled for the last 13 years with Tom Brady and Belichick. He turned "one of those guys" into an 11-5 season. LOL

        It's not about saving an 8-8 season. It's about saving a 10-6, 11-5, 12-4 season.

You're 4-0. You bring in your unknown rookie because your franchise QB got hurt for say 6 weeks. He goes 1-5. You're 5-5 now. If you have a capable backup who can keep you afloat, you're 7-3 if he goes .500.

        Big difference IMO.

Fair enough you don't want to watch him. But what about the other 52 guys in the locker room who have to work, study, practice and play in those games? You have to atleast present the appearance of trying to win those games for the rest of the locker room, right?

By trotting out some journeyman bum? Nah, sorry that doesn't give off the appearance of trying to win anymore than starting a kid you've drafted and developed in your system. At least not to me.

You guys act like the talent pool of capable veteran backups is so deep. Half the league can't find a starter who is worth a damn.

I agree with the lack of talent at the QB position. Redskins are about to pay Kirk Cousins close to $20 million. We are talking about back-up QBs. Like you say most teams are stuggling to find QB1 let alone a capable back-up. Given the limit ammount of snaps that a #2 gets in practice if you have a young QB you want to develop you make him the #1 and get a veteran behind him (like McCown) who can pick up the offence quickly and can get his work in with just 15-20% of the snaps per week.

There is no right or wrong answer at the end of the day. Some teams do it one way, some do it the other way. New England won a ring with Brady being behind a veteran. The Giants won one with Jeff Hosteler behind Sims.

Sanchez, McCown, Fitz, Stanton, Vick off the top of my head. Guys I don't mind filling in, but don't want over a full 16 game season.

Who are these guys who have been drafted and developed you're talking about? Seems like it's a clear starter, a veteran backup, and a project rookie for most teams. How many teams groom a guy for multiple seasons? Any QB but the starter seems to be a revolving door on most teams.

Are guys who mainly sat before playing games this season due to injury. I feel as confident (probably more) going into a game with either one of them as I would with the QBs you've listed.

And that revolving door thing sounds like a coaching and development problem.

As a die hard Steelers fan who has been one for well over 35 years and who has not missed watching a single game since 1994 please allow me to say that Michael Vick is AWFUL and he should NEVER take another snap in any league. Never. Ever.

Also, Landry Jones is marginally capable and I have very little faith in him. The Steelers would have been better off with Bruce Gradkowski this past season, had he not been injured in the preseason.

As for the bolded part, some teams already do this. And some of them have done it multiple times over the years...but these are also the teams that are constantly picking in the Top 5-10 every other year too.

It's tough to say exactly what the issue is because on one hand, you can say it is a coaching/development problem but at the same time, most HC rather play it safe if it means they get to keep their job an extra year, in which case I don't necessarily blame them for going that route.

You can't always draft a young QB you want to develop. There aren't that many in the draft to begin with, and quarterback needy teams are all over that. You're talking about a serious luxury as far as drafting a guy just to groom him behind your starter. Journeyman veterans are easier to come by.

I agree. Vick is horrible. His time is up. He needs to retire. It might be time for the Steelers to start looking for a qb in this draft or the next for their quarterback of the future. If Ben continues to take the type of beating he took this year, he won't play for too many more seasons.

He didn't take a beating (20 sacks in 12 games). He just took a few shots that would have injured any one. Ben is 5 years younger than Brady and I'm confident he'll play AT LEAST that long.

The $34.1 million Roger Goodell made in 2014 is nearly three times what CEOs of similar-sized companies pulled down -- so why does the NFL commissioner get paid so much?

Goodell's salary explained. Pretty good article.
