Pffft. Saints fans are still mad at John Carney anyway. I'm sure they'd welcome more company.

Stealing from a random google search result from a few years ago: http://www.advancednflstats.com/2008...for-kicks.html

I'll make one observation about modeling field goal kicks. Out to the 10 yard line, it seems like bad snaps or holds would be the biggest factor in missed kicks. From the 10 out to the 36 yard line, accuracy is the determining factor. Then outside the 36, range is the limiting consideration. I'm sure different kickers have different ranges, and environmental factors are very important, but you can see a slight inflection at the 36.

SPTO argument is that a 20 yard kick and a 42 yard kick have similar success rates? Really?

Pretty sure I read it was 83% last year. Personally, I would prefer something closer to the 90% neighborhood. Just enough doubt to give a reason to watch and add a bit of drama.

Russell Wilson apparently has the best selling NFL and MLB Jersey right now.

I still say we just get rid of placekicking and force kickers to dropkick. Get rid of the holders. Just force the kicker to catch the ball, and then drop kick it.

Just imagine how much more valuable a good kicker would be when he has know how to drop the ball as well as kick it.

Not similar, but similar enough. We're talking about a straight ahead kick there's no angles to contend with but i'll concede defeat here as the evidence is kicking my butt.

Too bad the NFL doesn't have a developmental league where they could apply this to for a year and make a decision based on it.

EDIT: This piece pretty much sums up my feelings:

How many of you really sweat it when your kicker lines up from the 25?

How many of the missed kicks in the 40-49 range were of the 49 yard variety, rather than the 42?

And as SPTO mentioned, it's a straight away kick. I don't think the difference would be as great as some people think.

I guess it depends on how bad the wind is I know in a couple stadiums it'll be interesting such as Ralph Wilson Stadium and Mile High.

Umm I wouldn't say I sweat it but a 42 yarder isn't a gimmie and I've seen many of them missed.

Do you really want to sweat out an extra point???

I sweat out two point conversions for good reasons. Extra points are called "extra" for a reason.

They need to really screw it up to lose those points.

It's fine, I don't understand why this is even a discussion.
