    Re: NFL Off Topic

Just be glad the majority of NFL players do not allow location to play as huge a part in their free agent destination as NBA players do. At least a team in Wisconsin has a chance at landing prized free agents in football.

I mean, yeah it's still a factor, but not the deciding factor like it seems to be in the other league.

I think that has more to do with the fact that the NFL doesn't have true free agency. With 5 year rookie deals, the franchise tag and the insane injury risk (causing players to lock in deals before even testing the market), most players don't see free agency until they're past their prime. The ones that do hit free agency in their prime years usually do it for a reason (they aren't any good, injury risk, "character flaws").

If a player with real options gets a similar offer from Green Bay and Miami, I'd be willing to bet he's picking Miami. There's a reason the NFL has those safe guards in place. Andrew Brandt is on the record saying that Charles Woodson was a really tough sell and they had to offer more than anyone else would.

Location is a major part of most of our life choices, why wouldn't it be for NFL players?

Miami also has a favorable tax situation I believe.

I think there's probably a reason the Packers are so strictly a draft and develop team and it's not just because that's what Ted prefers. It's out of necessity.

There are hazards signing free agents everywhere. Jacksonville might not be the best market, but it's still warm a lot of the time and is a nice vacation spot. Just ask Hugh Douglas and Aaron Ross...

At the time, it came down to us and Tampa Bay to sign Woodson. Must not have that much of a tough sell job for him to choose Wisconsin over Florida. Think the contract Tampa offered wasn't that much different from what we were offering him. I'll see if I can find the link to it.

These same arguments were made in the 90s when the Packers were trying to convince Reggie White to come to Wisconsin. His decision to sign with the Packers was all the more surprising considering the team hadn't won a championship in almost 30 years, the city is lily white, and the weather is terrible.

Interesting that the free agency allure of Green Bay still hasn't improved much after 20+ years of sustained success.

Keep in mind that it was only 5 players of the 82 they polled that mentioned Green Bay. I think people are blowing this out of proportion a bit.

Starting to get real sick of ESPN, as is Chris Long.

Chris Long gets it. With St. Louis Rams roster cuts looming Tuesday, ESPN delivered a report from team headquarters about whether or not Michael Sam, the first openly gay player to be selected in the NFL draft, will make the team. Well, it started out that way anyway. Things took a weird turn when ESPN’s Josina […]

Sal Paolantonio asking Ray Rice ,”What did your wife say to you in final words of encouragement before you took the field?” after his first preseason still takes the cake as ESPN has no shame moment of August.

Not really a terrible argument because the Dodgers are in a much, much better position to win than the Marlins are. The money and the "nightlife" are bonus. He can get all three. And he's saying "it doesn't matter what money you give me, I want to win" so that's (apparently) the deciding factor for him.
