    Re: NFL Off Topic

In a "pecking" order (as far as most talked about topics), I would put what happened in STL at the top.

The past few days I keep reading, watching and hearing about bad calls but not so much with what happened to Keenum. As an example, I always read MMQB and it was barely mentioned at the end but the flags/refs where referenced much. Maybe I don't read/watch enough and maybe it's more of a soap box than anything...

I hate the word "protocol" as I get the feel from teams (when they use it) like it's an obligation versus an assurance the player is fully healthy to return. Even last week with Oklahoma, the QB gets hit hard...stays in the game thru the end of the 1st half then is taken out after MDs review him. I know that's not the NFL but it still bothers me. For that matter, I don't understand how a player can be diagnosed with a concussion then be cleared to the play the next week. That doesn't seem like it's benefiting the player to me.

...then again, who knows. Maybe I'm just being ignorant.

      Re: NFL Off Topic

The NFL has set up an independent medical review of all head injuries. He isn't an "official" in the same vein as a ref. He does have the power to stop the game if he deems a player needs further review. There are also two "red hats" medical personnel not associated with either team that is also a part of that.

Outside of stopping play when a player fails to get up on his own in a timely manner, not much the ref and his crew could do about what happened to Keenum. I think that is the big difference here.

I thought it was crazy the STL game wasn't stopped for Keenum, that was as obvious as it gets. I don't know the process the independent spotter has to go through to stop a game though, I mean does the guy run out onto the field like a HC calling a TO?

The Oklahoma example was worrying me during the game, Mayfield not only stayed in the game but continued scrambling on subsequent plays and if he'd incurred another hit... yikes man, that's scary dangerous

I feel like I saw plenty of media on Keenum. It was blatant that it was mishandled.

On the Manziel topic, while there may not be language in his contract, he apparently had an agreement with Pettine going into the bye week.

"I let him know that I'm not going to do anything that's going to be a distraction to this team or be an embarrassment to the organization,'' Manziel said last week of his conversation with Pettine. "I'm going to get a chance to go and relax like everybody else in this locker room is. I don't think they're going to have to worry about me this week."

Then these videos and pictures come out, rumors of him being out at bars or clubs or whatever it was all night, etc. Based on his past events off the field, anything like that is guaranteed to end up online.

Distraction or embarrassment is definitely open to interpretation in this regard of what Manziel did on the bye week down in Texas. But by now, lets be honest, he has an extremely short leash as far as Pettine and the front office is concerned, especially when considering the recent suspected DV incident that only just started to exit the headlines. He has done absolutely nothing to help get rid of his rich, wild boozing party kid image from college, even after going to rehab and promising that he would focus more on his job this season and be more mature this year.

Hopefully the police catch, or already caught, the jackass who shot him. And find out why the hell they did it.

Absolutely right, good point. I had Josh Gordon on my mind, but that was because he was in the substance abuse "program." As far as we know Johnny is not in, but I believe membership into that exclusive club is private until it escalates to the point where it results in suspensions.

I suppose it is possible Johnny is in the early level of the program, and if so, the benching makes much more sense. But that is idle speculation.

If I am not mistaken the procedure is that there are two "spotters" who are not team employees. When they see that a player requires medical attention they buzz the ref to let them know that a stoppage in play is needed. Then the training staff comes out to check the player. In this case the spotters did not buzz the refs because, in their own words, "they saw the trainer already going out."

It could be that the refs sent the trainer(s) back to the sideline due to not being buzzed and they wanted to safeguard against shenanigans to delay the game.

If that spoken agreement is the justification for the benching, that is unjust. Johnny also said he would relax during the bye week. Hanging out and partying with friends is a normal way for people his age to relax.

I think there has to be more to the story. Maybe he is showing up late for meetings or not studying/preparing as he should and this video was the last straw.

Yeah, like I said, it's wide open to interpretation when you get into the whole "distraction", " embarrassment", etc. Whether that spoken agreement was the specific justification that Pettine used, clearly there is animosity between him and Manziel. It'll be interesting to see if anything else comes out about this, especially since it seems like Pettine is ready to just stick Manziel in a corner for the rest of the season.
