I highly disagree with this. He's a garbage QB, but he should definitely have a job somewhere.

My only take on him as a backup is this (outside of me saying he should have a job somewhere): He runs too much to be an ideal (emphasis mine) backup. Backup QBs shouldn't go in, but when they do go in you need them to stay healthy or then you're stuck with QB3 which is even less ideal.

This is the same QB we were talking about potentially being cut before the season (both due to play and pay) before the whole protest thing went down.

The pendulum is just swinging the other way now - before people were downplaying him (somewhat rightfully so, he had major flaws in his game when this was being said - some that are still there) too much and not giving his game enough credit. Now people are giving his game too much credit to compensate for the fact it's not right he isn't on a roster.

I'd agree w/ the above if it was in the Madden forum. Sort by an attribute, drop him on a team.

Talent trumps everything though, in a league of 2nd/3rd/4th+ chances.

The outrage over him not being on a team reminds me a bit of the Tebow hysteria. Less about ability and logic, more about emotion and largely imagined persecution IMO.

Did his mechanics improve under Kelly?

Didn't pay any attention to SF but I do remember that being a big topic of discussion in regards to him in particular.

Depends on how much value you put into advanced stats but in 2016 he was 33rd in adjusted completion percentage and when he had a clean pocket he was 29th in the league in passer rating. PFF had him as their 29th best QB.

Obviously it's a team game, and the team around him is trash (see: him almost going to the super bowl, getting a big contract and subsequently almost losing his job due to said contract) while he didn't really change much as a QB. It's why his play got undervalued and then overvalued.

I'm also trying to be as objective as possible here, because I've always hated him strictly as a QB but with the climate the way it is anything I want to say about his play would most likely get dismissed for the wrong reasons.

I can point to many reasons I don't think he's a good quarterback (I don't) but people will misconstrue that as me thinking that I support him not having a job in the league (I don't.)

Actually, it was 4:1 (16 TD's, 4 INT's). I remember near the end of the season listening to them break him down and while his passing numbers looked good, he was turning the ball over a lot (9 fumbles) and taking a ton of sacks because he was holding it too long.

According to the advanced metrics, he was basically an average passer last year. Honestly, as bad as the 49ers were, I don't know how much I buy into those metrics...but smarter people than I come up with this stuff.

His biggest problem has always been reading the defense and seeing the field. He misses out on plays because he doesn't recognize the open receiver if it's not his first read.

Take away all the baggage, and Kaep is guy with a career sub-60% completion rate, averaging sub-200 yards per game, and was woefully inefficient when he was asked to carry the load more on offense with that 2014 Niners team.

Of course no one's gonna go out of their way to sign him. Not when you have 2nd year QBs, and guys on mediocre teams, coming out throwing 4,000 yards per year. Never mind what film room types say about his ability to read defenses.

Plenty of bad QBs have jobs.

I don't think they should but there aren't enough good QBs to get jobs.

I'd gladly take him on the Packers if we didn't have Hundley.

Actually, now that I think about it that's a best-case scenario. If we can get a 2nd or 3rd rounder for Hundley, **** it. Sign Kap and hope he doesn't have to see the field and we can draft someone next year to develop if we aren't keeping Callahan around because he's not ready to be a #2.

Come on, Tebow is a career 45% passer.

Only outrage over him not getting signed was from his diehard college fans.

Just think its sad, and a terrible lesson, that what Kaepernick has done is considered "baggage," but criminals get 2nd, 3rd, 4th chances.

This was the case before we found out that he only cared about social issues on a superficial level. He didn't even vote in the last election lol.
