Re: Thread for NFL players in trouble with the law

Ray Rice hit his wife on Valentine's Day. It remained in focus this long bc of the video tapes and timing of their releases (calculated timing). And once the can of worms is opened, there will always be more trying to stir the pot. There's also Gordon and Welker, but the public won't care enough for their stories to go viral. There is always something going on with an NFL player here or there.

As to the 2nd though you can't discount how close these issues came up. From a tv news perspective, one story every couple months is a far cry from 3 stories in the span of a week or 2. Again no doubt the video was the thing that skyrocketed everything, but I also know first hand that the rapid fire nature of these stories was a contributing factor as well.
When this happened to Marshall years ago when he was still with the Broncos it was news for several months.

That was my original point. when the stories were released to the public not when they actually happened. Even with the video if Rice was an isolated incident this would all be playing out very differently in terms of the tv news coverage. Again I witnessed this first hand

The first video was released in what February? March? I'm not really sure what you're trying to say. You witnessed what first hand?

It's not that hard, find a list of NFL players that have been in trouble over the years.

I thought we were talking about the inside elevator video? Is that not the one you are claiming is solely to blame for the current state of media attention on the NFL, do I have that wrong?

What did you witness first hand?

I work in tv news, an nbc affiliate which I've stated several times on this site so I see what goes into their decisions on what to cover, what not to and why. From that perspective I'm seeing a big difference in the coverage of recent events compared to just about anything you can bring up from the past.

Plus we seem to have forgotten in this thread that what's going on right now is way bigger than "players that have been in trouble over the years" We may loose a commissioner and an entire team's front office because of this. These things have no precedent.

Re: Thread for NFL players in trouble with the law

When Roland Martin suggested there's a media double standard regarding the domestic abuse case of female soccer star Hope Solo during a Morning Joe panel, things got a bit tense...

This sort of thing is part of my problem with the whole topic. There's a double standard going on that shouldn't be happening and the whole dumpster fire that's going on with the NFL right now isn't even about the issue at hand anymore. It's about the scandal that people have been seduced by more than anything. If it's one thing America loves, it's a good scandal.

He makes a great point and they lose their **** and quickly change the subject. Funny how quick the tone changes when you don't follow the agenda.

It's sort of comical watching the cbs pregame show attempt to deal with all this

Yes, well, MSNBC doesn't want to come under the same fire from NOW that the NFL is. Violence within a group is seen as an internal problem, and not something to talk about. When somebody outside the group attacks a member of the group, then the group will make a big deal of it. We see this in the media all the time. I like your final sentence. Does not fit agenda, does not get reported. The agenda is to make money, making money means keeping viewers happy, giving them what they want and keeping them tuning in so advertisers will pay more for airtime to sell useless crap to those viewers.

If anybody has an agenda, it's NOW. Didn't hear a peep from them when the Ray Rice elevator video surfaced. Didn't hear anything from them when Goodell handed down Rices original suspension(when everybody was complaining about it being too light). Didn't hear a thing from them when the MMA fighter War Machine damn near beat his girlfriend to death.(and there are photos), hell we didn't even hear from NOW when the 2nd Rice video surfaced. It wasn't until someone said the NFL had seen the tape before that NOW president started smiling for the cameras.

Ray Rice will now claim the video of him was edited to show him in an unfair light.

The NFL has not said who will hear Ravens running back Ray Rice's appeal of his indefinite suspension, but we may have some idea about what Rice will be arguing when the time comes.
