From the day after the NFC championship game:

"I see [his role next season] as very similar," Shanahan said. "I mean, we've got to be careful with that. Running back is different, but he's also built like a running back and runs like a running back. He just happens to do stuff a receiver also does really good. If you look at his body, he looks more like a running back. But we never want to stop using him at receiver.

"And it's just the threat that he can be a running back at any time is a huge advantage for your team, and it's a huge advantage for Deebo too. It's a way he can make sure that he gets touches. You can do that at receiver but not like when you can just hand the ball to a guy. So, we've always got to keep that threat. That's what separates him. Deebo knows that too."
And Deebo seemed cool with it then.

The wide back position took its toll on Samuel's body through this extended season that included 17 regular-season outings plus three more playoff games. However, he has no problem doing it again in 2022, if that's what's asked of him.

"Yeah, I'm perfectly fine with it," Samuel said. "Like I stated all year long, I'm down for whatever to help this team win in every aspect."

Well then I'm curious to hear what changed between his comments then and the report now that his entire reason for wanting out is due to his usage, something doesnt smell right here. SF said they wanted to lock him up long term, Shanahan said he wanted him there for many years, Deebo says hes open to the same role he had last year and suddenly he won't even negotiate and wants to be traded. If this is a negotiating tactic then its a poor one. Is he doubling down because he didn't get the reaction he wanted after he scrubbed his social media of all SF references?

When the news first broke I thought he was dissatisfied with the 49ers movement on QB so I'm definitely surprised its due to him not liking his hybrid role.

The hybrid role is why he blew up and became an X factor. I bet he still wants that hybrid x factor pay tho

My guess he got hurt last year. And doesn't want to go through another season like that again.

              2022 Offseason Thread

I really think he sees the money WR get (and are getting) and the money RB get, and wanted to make it abundantly clear he’s a WR who can run, not a RB who can catch and run routes. It was all good when you’re focusing on the game at hand, but when you have time to think about it all offseason, I think he’s gotten an idea in his head.

Remember when Jimmy Graham argued for the franchise tag at the WR position because that’s how he was used instead of the smaller number a TE would get when tagged?

I don’t think he wants to be pigeon holed as anything other than a #1 WR, and putting up the receiving numbers he did last year on top of the rushing numbers, he shouldn’t be. But SF runs such a scheme that he would probably never be a WR1 as you see them on other teams, so he would be stuck as a hybrid guy. Get out, get paid, prove yourself as a true WR1 on a different team.

I wouldn’t go about it that way as just a guy sitting on his couch, but Deebo is trying to maximize his earnings for the X years he’s got in the league. Having been banged up a bit during his career, he may not even last that long so he’s trying to cash in now while the WR market is hot. Sucks as a SF fan, but understandable when put in his shoes making the best decision for his future.

Do the same thing tomorrow. And the next. Now do it forever.

Not just this but that if he ever get's tagged, the franchise tag for a WR is significantly higher than that of a RB.

I don't know enough to understand what goes into what qualifies a player to be tagged at a specific position but I have to believe that if it got into his head that the 49ers could eventually tag him as a RB instead of WR that could be a big $$$$ issue to him. (And I don't blame him).

It was reported last week that Deebo was looking for a deal around $25M a year. And I've seen it reported that the Niners aren't willing to go past $20M a year.

I think Deebo legitimately likes the wide-back role, but he realizes the toll it takes on his body and wants to be compensated for it. Can't fault him there.

I'm not too worried yet. Robbie Gould of all people demanded a trade a few years ago. The first offer for Kittle's extension was apparently terrible. They eventually worked something out with both of them. Maybe Deebo gets traded tomorrow, but I'm optimistic they'll eventually find common ground and get an extension done. Hopefully there's less drama for Bosa's extension.

Saw this stat that He was being used more in the backfield. Doesn't mean much. But yeah I think all you guys are nailing it on the head.

SF claims they aren't trading him and if they did I don't see any way they trade him inside the NFC when they'll have a plethora of interested teams.

Modern athletes don't go for that "wait it out, hope that he just gives up and suddenly wants to play for us again" approach by these organizations anymore. These dudes don't give a damn lol.
