Totally agree on Dumervil. In what I've noticed through the first six games is that he doesn't bring it every play. His drive isn't always there, and he is able to be handled by just the opposing tackle. When you watch Miller rush the passer, he is getting after it....hard. Miller demands attention at all times. Dumervil needs to follow suite. I thought that is what this defense was going to be about....pick your poison....Dumervil or Miller. You can't double team both of them, and if you do, you will leave the middle wide open. So far, it turns out they haven't had to double team both of them. Dumervil's motor doesn't run wide open all the time.
**edit - I pretty much just repeated everything you just said **
Get after it on known passing situations, ahead or not. Pressue the QB to make a quick decision. Force the issue. Gamble once in a while, even if it means giving up a big play here and there. That's what opportunistic defenses do. Back in the 80's and 90's, that's what they were. They didn't have dominant defenses by any means, but they made plays. I'd really like to see them get back to that.
I still think they can, but they need to quit being so conservative. They don't have a defense that is strong up the middle. They are smaller, and they can't just dominate an offense by playing a straight-up 4-3. They did a good job on Monday night, but you are right 86...they should have. That Charger line hasn't been good and Dumervil was going up against their back-up LT with Gaither being out.
