Its official, Singletary a Niner..asst head coach and linebackers

The official source for San Francisco 49ers news, schedules, stats, scores and more.

“I am excited and honored to be here. We need to establish a mindset, an attitude here and Coach Nolan will do that,” Singletary said. “People need to understand Coach Nolan knows what it takes to win. He knows the plan. The biggest reason I’m here is because I know Mike knows exactly what it takes to win. I’m excited about that, the coaching staff will be excited about that, the team will be excited about that and the City should be excited about it. We need to get going and I’m ready to get to work.”

Singletary great move, Reeves as GM or OC would be excellent especially with his coaching experience.

It would be great for the Niners to hire Newsome, but why would he make a latteral move at best to the Niners? He would have to share some personel matters with Nolan. It is too bad the Niners couldn't have gotten Savage from the Ravens.

I doubt Newsome comes. Balitmore denied Cleveland to speak with him, I dont see why they would allow the Niners(divison foes with Cleveland though) Plus, he is still under contract so the Niners would have to compensate. Im sure there is someone out there

I agree with the above guy, Savage would of been great.

Man im almost as hyped to have Singletary as I am Nolan

Brighter days for the Niners are almost here! Kinda irks me that more of the Niner fans that come to this forum didnt respond to the Nolan hiring..im sure when its turned around, they willc hange their tune.

The official source for San Francisco 49ers news, schedules, stats, scores and more.

Mike Nolan has a vision of success for the 49ers and to achieve his goal he will surround himself with coaches who share the same dream, who understand what it takes to get to the top and who are committed to seeing the plan through.

His first step was the hiring of Mike Singletary as assistant head coach / linebackers coach. Singletary leaves a very comfortable position with the Baltimore Ravens where coached Ray Lewis and one of the better groups of linebackers in the National Football League. He also spent that time getting to know and respect Mike Nolan.

“I think apart from me knowing Mike as a man and knowing him as a coach and knowing him to be true to his word in every sense, everything he has ever told me he has done,” Singletary said. “In coming here when I sat down and talked to Coach Nolan, he said, ‘I want you to understand that I want you to come with me to help me build something great. I want you to come with me and come alongside me and help me with this vision that I have. You understand what it is that I want to do. You understand what I want to build. You understand my vision of greatness. Come with me to do that and everything else will work itself out.”

Certainly there is much to be worked out with the 49ers after their 2-14 season. Team owner John York started the rebuilding process with the hiring of Nolan as head coach and now Nolan continues the process by putting together his own coaching staff.

The hard work ahead is well known, but it does not intimidate Nolan or Singletary.

“For me, I am in the business of correcting what is wrong. I am in the business, along with Coach Nolan, of taking something that just may be in shambles or whatever and building it up to be something special,” Singletary said. “The one word that I would use more so than anything else when I look at film of the 49ers from last year, there were a ton of injuries. When you look at the amount of injuries, and I don’t know what the leadership was and I don’t know anybody on that staff I don’t think, as I look at the opportunity that we have, there is a lot of talent on this team. There are a lot of young guys and a lot of youth.

“It’s all about believing. It’s all about believing. Believing that you could be great. Believing that you can be special. Believing that we can be an elite team. Believing that we can get back to what we were before. That is what Coach Nolan represents to me. Yes, I could have stayed in Baltimore. Yes, I could coach the best linebacking corps in the League. Yes, that would be a wonderful thing, but I think in life for me as I look at the journey that I’m on, I have the opportunity here to build something. To make a statement along with Coach Nolan. Creating something great that can be great and I just have to believe that it will be great.”

Singletary will work with the 49ers linebacking corps that is the strength of the defense unit and is perhaps the deepest unit on the roster. With Derek Smith, Jeff Ulbrich, Jamie Winborn and Julian Peterson, Singletary has an excellent group of athletes to work with.

“When I look at the linebacking corps, I see some guys that are good athletes, some guys that can run, and some guys that can make plays. And of course in Baltimore, that’s what we have, guys that can make plays,” Singletary said. The last thing that I’m going to do, I don’t think any of these guys will ever hear me talk about the linebackers that we had in Baltimore. We have some great linebackers in Baltimore. But I think you have some great linebackers here and it’s just a matter of them being willing to pay the price, being willing to learn.

“A lot of greatness is not about the talent that you have. You know when you look at film; so many times you don’t see what you really need to see. I think sometimes in terms of technique and in terms of the commitment to excellence that they have. It’s just little things that I think can make a tremendous difference. I’m excited to see what they can do. I don’t know how good they can be. But I know there is a lot to start with.”

                            One More From Singletary

RE – Is it strange to come to this organization after being a rival in his playing days?

“It is interesting that you would ask this question. He gave me this shirt here and said if I would put this on. So, I was putting it on and all those memories were coming into my mind, but I think the guys here—all of the ball players that are here—should really appreciate, even if they can’t understand, what this organization was. I’m so excited that Mike Nolan is here and has really trusted me to come alongside him to help bring that back. The past will always be the past, but you have to learn and draw from the past to bring about a new present. So, I’m excited from that perspective from what the 49ers have always meant to me. Whenever I think of the 49ers even until this day, I think of greatness, I think of excellence, I think of tradition.”

I think it'll be an added incentive for Peterson to come back because he will be learning from the best.
