I didnt expect this and never heard his name brought. Obv I dont know nothing about the guy except what I read. This is one of those times as fans when you trust the move of the head coach. Just because we havent heard the guys name, doesnt mean he isnt or wont be a good coach .

Yeah I didnt know the man existed up until a few hours ago, so lets hope Nolan gets this one right. He said hes been on his list, which has had other no names on it. That is until they got their chance, an example would be Andy Reid.

Looks more and more like the Niners are going to switch to 3-4 as their base defense.Peterson more then likely will be tagged again, their strongest postion is linebackers. Im leaning more and more, if they keep the first pick to take Derrick Johnson. Switching, can have Adams and Sopoaga play NT and have Bryant Young move to defensive end and switch out with Carter and Engleberger.

"My biggest curiosity is how good of an attacking-type player Julian Peterson would be," - Nolan said
While a switch in formation hardly would be a cure-all for the team's ills after nearly setting a franchise record for points allowed in 2004, it would create some preparation problems for most 49ers opponents because no team in the NFC uses the 3-4 as its primary defense (six AFC teams, including the Raiders, used the 3-4 in 2004).

Teams that rarely see the 3-4 say it requires extra work in practice to get blocking assignments correct.

                            Few more "tidbits"

Looking to mimic the organizational structures that boosted the Patriots and Eagles to the Super Bowl, the 49ers are giving new coach Mike Nolan the ultimate say in roster decisions despite the hiring of Scot McCloughan as the vice president of player personnel. McCloughlan will be doing plenty of work, however, in terms of overseeing the draft, free agency, re-signings and trades. Formerly the Seahawks director of college scouting, he also worked in the Packers scouting department and came recommended by former Packers G.M. Ron Wolf. McCloughan, 33, will have some cross-bay rivals in that his father and brother are Raiders scouts. At his disposal is the No. 1 overall draft pick, where the 49ers haven't selected from since 1964. McCloughan is young, hasn't been a personnel chief before and hasn't worked with Nolan in the past. But it's what the 49ers were looking for, and Nolan had a say in the hire. . . .
Nolan is seriously considering switching the base defense from a 4-3 to a 3-4, which he ran as the Ravens defensive coordinator the past three years. Nolan likes the ability to have different linebackers blitz. OLB Julian Peterson, MLB Derek Smith, WLB Jeff Ulbrich and WLB Jamie Winborn make up a solid corps and the team's best unit. But a 3-4 could make things awkward for RDE Andre Carter, who must first overcame back problems that sidelined him much of 2004. The 3-4 will, at the very least, be employed in their third-down packages. The 49ers haven't used that scheme on an every-down basis since 1993. . . .
Something to prove: Some offensive linemen are destined to at least try switching to different positions, and that likely includes 2003 first-round pick LT Kwame Harris. Unable to make a smooth transition to the left side his first two years, he very well could return to his native right tackle, where he played throughout high school and college. It's far too early to consider Harris a bust, especially considering he's a strong run blocker and intelligent. He just needs to work on his pass-blocking technique and maintain a commitment to the weight room.

I think they should move down in the draft and get a D-Lineman and a real LT. It was foolish to draft Harris who played RT in college and think he could move to the left side. He will play better on the right and if you get a quality LT in the draft the whole O-line gets better. Getting Newberry back at center and having some combo of Heitman, Smiley, Kosier at guard will make th line more than decent and maybe give whoever is back at QB some time to complete a pass.
