Re: Official San Francisco 49ers thread

I have no problem with letting Peterson go. Hindsight makes it look bad but he wasn't worth $20 million or whatever he was looking for. If they signed him then, they'd have had him restructuring by now.

You have to get younger and cheaper.

Smith the jury is out. This injury gives him a reprieve because if he didn't show improvement in his numbers of last season, there would be a lot of second-guessing by the end of the season. With that line and the lack of weapons, there was likely going to be little improvement.

They should at least think about drafting a QB this year. Not a first rounder but someone to groom because Dilfer isn't going to be around forever.

As for whether they should have drafted someone else, well the stud of that draft so far appears to be Merriman, picked 11th or 12th. But Edwards may be on his way to a breakout season, so while we needed a QB of the future at the time of the 2005 draft, we could use Edwards too, even though he may not have been worth the first pick of the draft.

The distressing thing about Smith is that he seems to be no better than some other young QBs who have the same amount of experience or less -- Derek Anderson at Cleveland, Romo.

Trent Edwards had a real good first game last week, which probably compares well with most of Smith's games.

The defense is finally looking solid and the offense is horrible. They have better players then last year, it has to be the play calling or something..I don’t know. I mean even the two games they won, it was because of the D, not the offense.

Bottom half of the league in pretty much every offensive team stats.

There's a new consensus forming that while Nolan has done a good job of getting us out of cap hell, he may not be the person to take us to the next level.

He didn't help his case when he said he didn't really know what's wrong with the offense.

He has no idea how to run an offense. You can tell he's really helped the defense, but the other side of the ball he's an idiot. He's a defensive guy which is why the perfect OC for this team was Turner who has experience and knew what he was doing. Hostler is AWFUL and is afraid to have either QB take a shot down the field. Low and behold on the only drive Trent threw the ball down field, they scored. Now I know Trent is terrible and you can't sling it down the field every play, but the ultra-conservative offense was brutal yesterday. It's obvious the game plan was to win 10-9, but that shouldn't be the case. Baltimore is a tough D, but you can't play scared. Having a predictable gameplan plays right in to their hands. There is no deep threat on the team and they are too scared to even try to throw it past 10 yards. I really hope during the bye week that Alex and Vern get healthy. They need to figure out a way to move the ball on offense because what they are doing now isn't working. They go in to the bye a game back and are lucky right now to be in that position. I was hoping to be in contention for a playoff spot this year and that can still happen. The defense is good enough to keep the team in games, the offense just needs to get in gear.

There's alot of funny stuff people are saying on KNBR 680.

Some BYU alumni said that the 9ers should hire a Detmer as an offensive coordinator . Another guy said that Tim Ratty should have been the starter over Alex Smith. Others are saying the 9ers should have traded down that draft (We all know the 9ers tried trading down to get more picks that season). I'm not ready to write off Alex Smith yet. The Kid is still one of the youngest QBs in the league. Nolan may be the problem. He's way too conservative. Nolan trusted Norv Turner last season to be aggressive.

That's what Ralph Barbieri was discussing with Steve Young, about letting loose. Even if Smith made mistakes and threw a couple of picks, it might be better for his long-term development.

I don't know that they were that much more aggressive under Turner. They relied on Gore and were in a lot of close games. Then for 3 quarters of the game up in Seattle, they were playing conservative and in the 4th quarter, managed to make enough plays.

Perhaps Nolan, from all those blowouts against KC and Chicago, wanted to keep it close and have a chance to win. But when opposing teams are bringing both safeties within 10 yards of the LOS, you can argue that the opponents are on to this strategy.

Well after seeing this past week in the NFC West I still think we have a shot at winning it. If we can get some offense to go with our good defense me might take it. We do have road games against Seattle and Arizona but neither team is look all that great.

Re: Official San Francisco 49ers thread

Back in 2005, I was hoping that Nolan would have traded franchised OLB Julian Peterson to the Chargers for franchised QB Drew Brees. Considering the player and position that both teams drafted in 2005, the trade would have made perfect sense.

As for the number one overall draft pick, I would have tried to trade with the Vikings for their two first rounders. At 7, I would have drafted WR Braylon Edwards (CLE offered their 3rd overall draft pick for Smith after the 49ers drafted him) and at 18, OT Alex Barron.

If I couldnt get that trade done, I would have most likely drafted WR Braylon Edwards number one overall. Sure, he wouldnt have been worth the number one overall draft pick but neither was Smith or anyone else back in 2005.

As for now, Nolan has done a pretty good job all things considered but letting Turner go was a huge mistake. I would have paid him HC money if needed in order for him to stay. Smith showed improvement and progress in 2006 after a horrible rookie season. Why screw that up?

Off topic a bit but I figured a Niners fan could answer me on something.

What was the name of the fullback you guys used to have that wore number 40?

I can only remember his knickname, it was "Bar none", he used to wear a breath right strip across the bridge of his nose.

I need a pic of him, but I cant search him up because I forgot his damn name.

                    Any help please.

                      William Floyd, FSU.

The guy after him also was #40 I think, Fred Beasley from Auburn.
