This is extremely basic commentary but to me Doc and Pang sound good besides the fact they are very limited in what they are able to say. It would just be fresh. I think Doc is incredibly descriptive and uses adjectives to just make the game exciting even when there isn't intense action. He's just got the voice to make you pay attention. With what they can do commentary wise today I just think him and Eddy or Pang would be awesome to listen to. Just my thoughts.

Re: Gary Thorne and Bill Clement again for NHL 13?
Now that I think about it, I could tolerate Doc and Eddy, but like I stated before I would prefer them to be reserved for bigger games/series to help give them a really different auditory atmosphere (which I know is slightly impractical given the sheer volume of space needed for commentary, although FIFA somehow manages to have multiple commentary teams doesn't it? So who knows?) It's just that ******* Pierre McGuire. Once I see his face or hear his voice I just become a Ticked Off Ted and EVERYONE associated with him during the game in question (usually Doc and Eddy) gets caught in the crossfire. Just like the Happy Gilmore / Bob Barker incident...
"[through gritted teeth]...I hate that Bob Barker."

Audio is one of the most time consuming and space consuming things there is. and really all it is is an after thought, I would rather them focus on the skating engine and things that actually effect gameplay. The audio is serviceable, it doent need to be any more than that. especially when gameplay elements need to be fixed.Comment

I don't think anyone here is disregarding gameplay fixes in favor of audio updates (aside from the original poster possibly), but I mean at the same time this is a discussion board and it can't hurt to have a conversation about the possibilities of the future of the in-game audio.

Re: Gary Thorne and Bill Clement again for NHL 13?
We all have to remember that there are different people working on different parts of the game. It's not just Sean or Dean doing everything. They do have guys hired to do audio, visuals, etc. So just because we talk about having different announcers doesn't mean that if they were to change commentators it would take time away from them actually doing gameplay stuff. It may have some affect due to spacing on the disc and just making sure everyone is on the same page but they have certain people hired for certain parts. Just like any other company. In fact I'd be willing to bet that the audio guy may not even have the tools to develop gameplay aspects of the game. Hell he may not even know hockey. He's specifically hired to do audio for a reason. I'm not a game developer so in no way am I fully credible on this but that's what I would think it's like. I mean they do put the job title underneath the name of the the EA worker during video interviews for a reason right? They want to let us know they have different people assigned to different parts of the game. Of course NHL isn't going to have as many guys as Madden because Madden has a much larger budget.Last edited by bwiggy33; 06-10-2012, 10:31 PM.NHL-Minnesota Wild

I don't understand the love for 'Doc' Emerick. He may have been good at one time. Now basically all he does is scream when there is a mildly exciting play. He is awful. I hate watching games on NBC. And Pierre McGuire is even worse.

Something about Emmerick just gets me. I want to be excited and feel a sense of accomplishment or disappointment when I play NHL. That's how Doc makes me feel. When I win the Stanley Cup I want to feel like I actually won it. Thorne and Clements lines are just too repetitive and unenthusiastic now so they have lost a lot of meaning.Last edited by bwiggy33; 06-13-2012, 01:45 AM.NHL-Minnesota Wild

Re: Gary Thorne and Bill Clement again for NHL 13?
Let me resond to this poster. Thinking that I would rather have new announcers than better gameplay is upsurd. I am very happy with the commentary of the NHL series it is the best in video game sports to date. My problem is just wanting something fresh. Gary is a great announcer he just is not revelant anymore to hockey. EA is always claiming authenticity and every year they are close very close. The announcing is usually spot on it is always amazing to me you can pause the game and the commentating never misses a beat. So maybe saying this was a dealbreaker for me was a little to stern just the passion for the game coming out. I had seen that Gary and Bill's contract was up last year. So I am saying that it looked to me that they are just going on the cheap here by not adding new announcers. I just wanted to plant a seed here. But by EA's coment's saying "much to the dismay of some fans Gary and Bill are coming back" this is a strong indication they are getting close to replacing them. With that being said I think the gameplay improvments are winning me over but I will wait till I see the finished project before buying.
They've had Gary and Bill build a commentary database since 07, have less of a budget than say a Madden and possibly even Fifa with how well Fifa seems to sell, and the commentary while it may have gotten a little stale due to it being the same team. Is likely the best commentary in a sports game with maybe the exception of NBA2k. What do you want them to do? Scrap it all and start over near the end of a console cycle?
Meanwhile 13 marks the most improvements the entire game has received in about 3 years, between the skating engine overhaul, the new AI and strats, the new goal tender animations and AI, presentation upgrades along with from what we're starting to hear an actual true broadcast type of camera. It makes no sense financially to redo the entire play by play script in one year.
I wouldn't say it's because they're being cheap. I do have a gripe about certain lines of audio being left in 12 that are way outdated (Especially the "Bruins haven't won since 72 spiel) but at the end of the day, I can understand the priorities being on the areas that needed the most amount of work (AI especially) for this year.Comment

Audio is expensive. I have a blog on this very matter. Check it out.

Next year i am hoping for mike emerick.
However as long as the commentary has new lines added and is not all just re-cycled from previous years ill be happy for now.
I just hope they have added more player interaction/team audio like talking about playoff runs star players on teams etc etc.
I swear to god if i hear the same 'when you think of the devils you think of one man...martin brodeur'.....i will scream!

Re: Gary Thorne and Bill Clement again for NHL 13?
I suspect the direction he's had at 2K benefits the NHL game. 2K has had excellent commentary since NFL2K. I think part of what helps is that it seems like a portion is recorded with both guys present at the same time. Everything else sounds stilted because it is just lines.Comment
