I would say the A.I. is best in NHL 2K3 by far, it is actually fantastic as I discovered only recently. The only problem are the goalies are brick walls in this game

Then it all started to fall apart slowly, where 2K8 has the worse a.i. in all 2k history. Which was really shame become the goalies in this game were really good.

I think if 2K8 has 2K3 a.i. and less bugs, we would still have hockey game from 2K today.

2K10 is the game that is closest to the 2k3. It even have a lot of animations from that great old game.

The tragedy of 2k9/ 2K10 is that somebody in lead of these latest games believed that people will love if they make the player models cartoony, ice blue, gameplay full of breakaways and many of the animations 2-3x faster than in real life.

Yeah 2K8 on the PS3 is where they lost me... The 360 degree skill stick was fun in a way but when you mastered it the game turned into a solo race.

I really liked 2k5 and at the beginning 2k8 (due to special tricks and chips, very cool done). Now I’m starting to see flaws in the second one (although I may just be a bad player, for example, I didn’t understand how to play defense in it, except for a power strike and throwing a player under the puck ... how to knock the puck in it? I do it in 2k5 to the “triangle” , but here I do not understand in any way)

As for 2k9 and 2k10 - just the same "cartoon" graphics pushes me away. In addition, in 2k10 they completely removed all special feints (chips) and classic teams. sadly (

Yeah, it's just very frustrating, from each of these games you could take 1 or 2 things and complete it as absolutely perfect game.
But as it was, there was always something way worse than in previous games. 2 steps forward, 5 back.

The lack of some sensible direction and identity crisis is what killed this series. I'm not surprised at all, the way they treated this game. It's sad.
And I definitely feel the pain of some developers that put their hearts on it.

Honestly there aren't many sports games series that don't follow that pattern. They do something right then they make the wrong changes the next iteration. Probably due to change in management or developers so that priority changes and it turns out to be a mix of several visions...

In fact, there are many such examples. The PS2 generation is the best in history, including due to the large number of games. There was a lot of the same hockey and football (sokker, real football), and there were different games (with their own characteristics).

But with the advent of the PS3 generation, games became "more expensive", they needed more time and money to develop them ... and here many companies bent down (

Just look at hockey on PS2:
- 989 Studios (NHL FaceOff)
- Midway Games (NHL Hitz)
- 2K (NHL 2K)
- EA (NHL)
- SONY company (Gretzky NHL)

Yes, companies did not constantly release games in the series (or some not for long), but the developers tried, there was variety and competition

What do we see then?

PS3 - only 2K and EA

Now, PS4 is EA only (unfortunately)

"graphics" is very often to blame, or rather the transition to a new engine, for sports simulators this transition is usually painful

SNES/GENESIS/Amiga (16-bit): EA NHL, Brett Hull hockey, Wayne Gretzky Hockey, Mario Lemieux Hockey, Mutant League Hockey, Hit The ice, Pro sports Hockey, NHL Stanley Cup, ESPN Hockey Night, Wayne Gretzky and the NHLPA All Stars etc, etc...
There was a lot to test and chose from. Of different quality though... But still.

Things to pay attention most:

* The game is tuned for the sliders start position at 50 (when possible)

* A.I. passing, dumping, shooting tendencies/ shot types selection

* A.I. aggressiveness (few of the players are little too aggressive with their sticks, need to re-adjust some of their attributes, now when they are working)

* A.I. defensive gap control

* Skating, shooting, checking and goalies animations etc.

* puck physics, looseness etc.

* I got destroyed Lol
