Re: The Official 2010-11 Regular Season Talk Thread
The Wild should thank Luongo for their win too. He was terrible tonight - out of position far too often.
Thomas looks like his Vezina self and was awesome again. Chara was a beast too. Boston is looking like a solid team againComment

LOL. The look of sheer terror on that fan's face was priceless. Bet he'll think twice before talking smack to an agitated hockey player as they pass by. I love it.Comment

Re: The Official 2010-11 Regular Season Talk Thread
Totally agree. Not only is 5 minutes not long enough, but penalties become a major cross to bear. It takes up 40% of the time. Imagine being on an 8-minute PP in the 1st period? LOL.DrJones formula eliminates the loser point. And if things aren't settled in 65 minutes, you penalize each team for not being able to find a winner by only awarding a point to whoever wins the shootout and none to the loser. It devalues the shootout (good) and values a reg/OT win while keeping ties out of the equation (also good) without giving out too many points (again, good). I really like DrJones idea, actually. My one change would be make it a 10 minute, 4 on 4 OT. I think that's how it should've always been... whoever decided a quarter of a period was long enough was off the mark. Half a period is long enough without being too long over the course of 82 games.
I really hope the NHL gets rid of any points for the loser. But it'll never be.
The league loves talking about 'parity' and how close the playoff races are. You can't have that without the way it is now.
I get disgusted when I hear how the Islanders are playing .600 hockey when they only have 2 wins in 5 games. Huh???Comment

Is that even true, though? I don't recall playoff races being that dull before the loser point. I just think that GM's like the optics of inflated point totals and bogus number of games "over .500" that placate the dull-minded. They'll never go for my system because a mediocre season would then be 75 points instead of 90.Originally posted by Thrash13Dr. Jones was right in stating that. The races weren't dull before. But Bettman and co. make it sound like things have never been this exciting. Is that even true, though? Two years ago I ran the numbers and removed the 3-point system. It barely changed any of the standings. A few teams jumped into the playoff bracket because they had more regulation wins, but the differential's were basically the same.
Like you said, it's all to paint the illusion for fans that their team, despite not making the playoffs, was a great team; "We were over .500 even though they had less than 40 wins!".
It's funny to watch teams jump from a non-playoff team the year before to a post-season club in the next - and vice versa.
When analysts try to figure out what changed, it's usually as simple as seeing they reversed their success rate in the shootout.Comment

I would talk **** for what ever reason I am just not scared of hockey players like a football player. Even though they are tough guys on the ice.Comment

Losers should get nada...no matter how it happened. This is pro sports. I would think teams would be playing super hard to avoid the shootout crap shoot knowing they could get no points.
Also after 3 periods Id flood do 10 min 4 on 4 then shootout...at worst this adds another 25-30 mins to games....4 on 4 with fresh ice....it wont be long for an odd man rush to develop.
Rypien should get 40 games....I' guessing the NHL gives him 20 or less.Comment

Ha. No way he gets more than 10.
Rypien's a meathead, but it's amazing how worked up people get about this kind of thing now. Would've been fun if the internet had been around in the 70s or 80s. People's heads would explode.Originally posted by Thrash13Dr. Jones was right in stating that. Re: The Official 2010-11 Regular Season Talk Thread
This is true.
Nothing like watching YouTube vids of fights spilling into the stands involving multiple members of a team. And that's just the ones that were caught on camera.
That was before every game was readily available on TV, though. Nowadays athletes are expected to behave professionally. Hockey has a long history of fans chirping at the players. What this fan claims to have said is actually rather tame and can't be the worst thing a fighter like Rypien has heard.
I think Rypien should be punished more for sucker punching Staubitz after being separated and having an altercation with the linesman. The NHL randomized wheel of suspension might lean towards making an example. I see 15 games.Last edited by ImTellinTim; 10-21-2010, 01:33 PM.Comment

Re: The Official 2010-11 Regular Season Talk Thread
Pretty sure they're not conflating Rypien's sins, though. The refs didn't write up a report alleging linesman abuse, so that's a non-issue. If the fan incident didn't take place, Rypien's sucker punch would've resulted in a game, maybe even just a fine. I predict 8 games.Originally posted by Thrash13Dr. Jones was right in stating that.
