Re: The Official 2010-11 Regular Season Talk Thread

The game can still be extremely physical without allowing for fights. The NFL is the hardest hitting league in the world (well, there's rugby too but I'm thinking generally), but players get ejected if they throw a punch and fights are not tolerated. Eliminate the fights, and enforce the rules. That's all it takes. Clearly, fighting isn't deterring anyone from running anyone else. If fights were banned, I don't think we'd end up missing them that much. Once this generation is gone, the new, no fighting generation will never care. I'm paying to see professional hockey, not pro boxing/MMA. It's to a point where it's just a sideshow. I love me some scrums and rough and tough play, but the staged fights and BS are just plain stupid.

Just look at the playoffs. Hardly any fights because the players don't want to risk a stupid 5 minute major where every minute counts. There can still be plenty of hitting and physicality without keeping fighting "legal", in it's current form. It's just not necessary to the sport.

      NFL - Buffalo Bills
      MLB - Cincinnati Reds

I made that comment in jest, hence the little emote at the end. Sorry you took offense to it. If you'd like though we can have a conversation about soccer in a non-hockey thread or pm

        @slick
I took your comments to mean that you wanted the sport to become basically all stick drills and skating. Still though I would hate if the fights were taken out of the game. Right now you get the game of hockey with the potential for boxing matches. A pretty good investment of time/money. They're fun to watch and generally seem to energize teams (and fans). They often raise the intensity of rivalries and create new ones.

Yeah, I saw that after I posted. Will delete.

I'm OK with some fighting as long as it's, for lack of a better word, organic. Sometimes emotions can run high and I say if two guys come to blows because it gets heated, then so be it. The problem is with these lame staged fights. I think there was a game last week (I don't remember who it was between) where the teams just dropped the gloves three straight times at the opening faceoff.

Before I even turned on the TV, we already allowed a goal? Chalk up another loss

I'm not a die hard hockey fan but I don't want to see fighting banned either. To me it's like throwing at hitters in baseball, or hard flagrant fouls in basketball. It's a message sender. I agree with Tim that it's much better when the fight happens over tension that finally boiled over, not premeditated stuff.

                  The Caps are pretty terrible.

If they make the playoffs, they'll get demolished.

No idea why Bruce is still the coach.

Good article (for a change) by Scott Burnside in response to Mario's whining:

                        L.O.L at the Avalanche.

                        That's all I have.

That's the first Burnside article I've ever read that's even remotely negative toward the Penguins. Maybe his book deal got canceled.

Andrew Alberts out with a broken wrist, joining Edler, Hamhuis, Ballard, and Sweatt on the sidelines. Nolan Baumgartner and Ryan Parent can't be called up due to waiver reasons. Canucks calling up Yann Sauve, who's 5th on their AHL depth chart. Knowing Sami "Mr. Glass" Salo, he's probably one harsh look away from a busted kneecap. Not good.

Let's face it, last year's Avs made the playoffs a season or two ahead of schedule. A fallback isn't surprising. They'll be fine long-term.
