So if any person with a goon on their team can't speak, I guess the league is going to be speechless....

EXACTLY. the islanders didn't "goon" up against us on friday, they just took cheap shot after cheap shot. its not about one dirty hit in that game. there were multiple dirty hits and cheap shots directed from the islanders players. matt cooke didn't even play!!!!!Comment

Re: The Official 2010-11 Regular Season Talk Thread
Man, it's so heartwarming to see the Pens take such an interest in cleaning up the league. And it's not just for their benefit, it's for all of us! We could all benefit from cleaning up the game! They're looking out for you and your favorite team!
I guess now that Cindy isn't getting treated with kid gloves by the officials anymore like he has been since he came into the league and now that people are actually taking liberties with the Pens' players instead of just running into Matt Cooke's elbows, it's time to clean up the game.
What goes around, comes around. And don't give me this "Everyone has a goon" business. Everyone does have a goon but the vast majority of those goons have respect for their fellow players. But some players have zero respect for their fellow players. And if one of those guys is on your team (hello Matt Cooke, Sean Avery, Steve Downie, etc) then yeah, you pretty much forfeit the right to talk about how the game needs to be cleaned up. Clean up your own house first and then lecture the rest of us.
The players could pretty easily solve this issue, by the way. By shunning players who acted like that on the ice, whether they're on the same team or not. If Matt Cooke comes into the locker room after acting like an irresponsible jackass for an evening, his teammates should simply say, "Look man, that isn't cool and that's not how we play. Knock it off or else." But as long as these guys have teammates (and coaches and owners) who condone their behavior, it's going to continue.Helen: Everyone's special, Dash.

The whole concept of goons in the NHL is stupid IMO. I'm all for having an "enforcer" on my team, but he better be able to do other things well, too. And his "enforcing" better not hurt the team, eitherEagles | Phillies | Sixers | Flyers

BlueNGold is right. I don't think Lemieux's comments were hypocritical because he writes the checks for Cooke; simply because every team has a guy that's a liability to cross the line at any given point. And that's the whole problem! Every team has a goon.
I'm very glad Lemieux spoke up about it. Clearly, when someone of his stature talks, people listen. You've seen the reaction to his comments. If that's JoeSmoe GM, no one really cares. Lemieux... people listen. And they should. Because he's the kind of player the NHL needs. The guys with skills who are getting knocked out nightly due to cheap shots. The NHL is only hurting itself by not punishing the dirty hits.
Get rid of the fools and employ the players who actually play hockey.NHL - Philadelphia Flyers
NFL - Buffalo Bills
MLB - Cincinnati Reds

With all due respect Slick, other teams have tough guys that still stay within the boundries and have a bit of respect for the game and other players Shaun Thorton being a good example. Guys like Cooke, Ott, Avery do not. You don't see Thornton head hunting guys or decking them from behind with intent to injure like you do a Cooke night in, night out.BlueNGold is right. Like I said, Super Mario didn't make even a peep when Cooke quite possibly ended Marc Savard's career on a blind side head shot. The Islanders decide to give them a taste of their own and all of a sudden he wants to save the sport of hockey! I think what he said makes sense, its the timing of it that somewhat makes me roll my eyes at the whole situation though. Clean up your own locker room first Mario then we'll talk.Comment

I can disagree with Lemieux' comments in general, but this isn't about the pens or really about his message either. What keeps being brought up is the messenger not the message, and the pure irony he would make comments like that while retaining the services of someone who is widely regarded as one of the dirtiest players in the league.
Actually you're right. They have the power to not have any goons on their team, and if that is the way they feel the league should be then by all means start with your own team. Otherwise you're a contributor to the problem that you find so appalling.Originally posted by BlueNGoldSo if any person with a goon on their team can't speak, I guess the league is going to be speechless....
Picture an obese person who eats mcdonalds 5 times a week and then decides to be critical of the obesity levels in society. Change what you can control to fit your belief sets before making critical comments about others.
Every team has enforcers, but there are only a handful of guys with that truly dirty reputation and track record. This is the point that people are making. Absolutely anyone has the potential to cross the line at any given time, but that potential is a lot higher for some guys than for others.Originally posted by slickdtcBlueNGold is right. Another VS classic.
Sabres down 2-0 in the first, then down 2-0 in shootout, and ended up winning after like, 10 rounds.
Now only 2 points behind Carolina for the 8th seed.Comment

Tonights matchup:
Colorado College vs. Wilkes Barre Scranton Penguins!
I think the Avalanche should re think their strategy tonight. If they can give up 9 goals with both their goalies in the game they should just play 6 on 5 all game, that would be fun!Comment
