They look to be both great games. A lot of it depends on personal preference however.

In the end, I want a realistic game of hockey that looks nice as well. The only troublesome thing I've heard about NHL so far is that it's supposedly a hit-fest with bodies flying everywhere. This has to be a negative point if you're into a really realistic game. Other then that, it looks great.

      I'm going with ESPN

He wasn't asking about AI and gameplay -- see the thread title.

That said, ESPN has the superior presentation in almost every aspect, IMO. If it's not in yours, then that's fine, but don't stoop to saying ESPN looks like PS1 graphics. That's just sad, man.

As for the gameplay, well, the games aren't out yet so we don't know for sure. But EVERY SINGLE REVIEW for EA has said that the AI is a bit spotty and the hitting is out of control (overwhelmingly aggressive AI checking to make up for positioning to make it more challenging).

And I DO happen to have a final build of ESPN in my hands, and it plays incredibly. It will take an absolute MIRACLE if EA's plays better than this.

Yes, EA has the new management mode -- no one's denying that is a great addition. But no, the on-ice AI and physics simply DO NOT match up to ESPN's.

And PS -- does it make sense to say "ESPN has horrible PS1-style graphics" and then say, "EA will have the better game; don't be fooled by ESPN's graphics" (referencing the fact that ESPN might just have great graphics?) Didn't make sense to me...

Please read gamespots updated impressions of nhl2004. They comment on nhl2004 great A.I for defence and offence. They also said it's simulation through and through, and the hitting is satifying.

For the record. EA does have greatly improved A.I.
