Re: The realignment cometh
Yeah, just seen it ended up being the same as that previous link. Figured it wasn't going to be exactly like that.
Surprised (and to be honest a little disappointed) that no team moved East.
On the Jets' side of things, I wish we were in a conference with other Canadian teams like I said earlier, but at least we're with Detroit and Chicago. I'll probably end up cursing at that fact in a few years though.

Re: The realignment cometh
Was never going to happen. Most Eastern teams were dead set against realignment. They were basically bought off by being given an easier path to make the playoffs than the Western teams. Plus if Phoenix moves to Quebec City during the offseason, they're simply shifted to the "Adams + Florida" division with no other movement required.Originally posted by Thrash13Dr. Jones was right in stating that. Re: The realignment cometh
1. To do otherwise would've meant splitting up Pittsburgh & Philly. The NHL didn't want to eliminate natural rivalries.
2. Canadian teams do very well attendance-wise in Florida because of all the snowbirds.Originally posted by Thrash13Dr. Jones was right in stating that. Re: The realignment cometh
You're getting a lot more Eastern (and a lot fewer Pacific) games. Considering the only realistic alternative was a straight Detroit-for-Winnipeg swap, I assumed Jackets fans would be pleased.Originally posted by Thrash13Dr. Jones was right in stating that. Re: The realignment cometh
Mike Ilitch has a lot of sway. Whoever owns Columbus does not.
Besides, you're going from 23 road games being played in the East/Central timezones to 33. Doesn't this address most of the Jackets' concerns?Last edited by DrJones; 12-05-2011, 09:58 PM.Originally posted by Thrash13Dr. Jones was right in stating that. Re: The realignment cometh
Playoff format:
1. Top 4 teams in each conference make playoffs.
2. First/second rounds: played within conference (1st vs 4th, 2nd vs 3rd, winners meet in second round).
3. Third round: 4 conference winners are re-seeded by point totals. Therefore, any combination of conference winners (ie, Vancouver, Detroit, Boston, Pittsburgh) is possible in third round and Stanley Cup Final.Originally posted by Thrash13Dr. Jones was right in stating that. I'm glad Detroit and Chicago are in the same conference. That would've been weird to split them up."You got it man. I don't watch hockey." SidVish"I thought LeBron James was just going to be another addition to help me score."

Re: The realignment cometh
Not a fan of this.
The LA Kings would have missed the playoffs last year under this system.
Teams that play in 8 team divisions are at a disadvantage compared to the 7 team divisions. This also increases the chances of seeing the same playoff matchups in the first 2 rounds every year (which of course I know is a good thing for some people).
Oh yeah this system also means the NBA will come back to Vancouver before the Islanders make the playoffs again.Comment

Re: The realignment cometh
There have been plenty of examples in recent years of 8th-place East teams having fewer points than 9th- or 10th-place West teams. Unless you go to a completely balanced schedule and a 1 vs 16 playoff format, this possibility always exists. Positives far outweigh the negatives for me.Not a fan of this.

I view this new format as a different one because we won't have conferences anymore. There have been plenty of examples in recent years of 8th-place East teams having fewer points than 9th- or 10th-place West teams. Low payroll teams like the Hurricanes and Islanders are really going to have an uphill battle to make the playoffs when their division has 4 teams that will always spend right up to the Cap (Pens, Caps, Rangers, Flyers). If I was an owner of either of those teams I would vote no.
I think the NHL just should have swapped Columbus for Winnipeg (I'm sure the Wings wouldn't be happy but the Western teams need them for attendance).Comment
