    Re: The realignment cometh

The strangest complaint I've seen regarding realignment is this one (I'm quoting Puck Daddy, but I've seen something similar in several articles/blogs).

    Loser: Cinderella

She's left the building, folks. Not only will Cinderella teams be hard to come by in a divisional playoff format, but the awesome thrill of the one-vs.-eight upset has gone the way of Crystal Pepsi. Somewhere, Arturs Irbe and Jaroslav Halak weep.
Cinderella teams will be hard to come by in a divisional format? Huh? Did nobody watch the NHL before the mid-90s? Big upsets were legion during the previous divisional playoff format (82-93). Virtually all the top teams got wiped out early in '82, '86, '91 and '93. Irbe and Halak have nothing on Richard Brodeur or Jon Casey or Glenn Healy. There will be no shortage of Cinderellas in the new playoff format.

      Re: The realignment cometh

Do they understand that a 1/4 matchup could feature what would essentially be a 1/8 matchup (record-wise) in the current format? Not only that, but the first and second rounds will feature teams that are familiar with each other. If that isn't conducive to great playoff series featuring upsets, I don't know what is. Some of these guys aren't thinking through what they're saying.

LOL! I actually posted a comment to that article and brought up the same examples as you.
Just because there isn't an 8th seed doesn't mean you can't have an underdog go deep into the playoffs.

I just love this new realignment. Not only does it help Wings and CBus fans (only 8 PST games), but I can't wait to build better rivalries.
Everyone knows rivalries start in the playoffs and there was never a more fierce time than before the current setup.
Finally the Wings can get back to loathing the Hawks, Blues and Stars; three teams I've felt indifferent about for over a decade.

If there is one good thing about this realignment, it's that the budding Columbus-St Louis rivalry gets to continue.

Oh and we just hired Craig Patrick. That cannot hurt, right?

I thought Winnepeg was over towards the west more than it is.

Unfortuantly I think Cinderella is going to be all too common.
I'm sure something like this is going to happen on a frequent basis...

            Red Wings 106
            Hawks 101
            Preds 96
            Jets 91
            Stars 89

            Devils 102
            Pens 101
            Rangers 92
            Flyers 84

Then the Flyers make the finals.

And they beat the number 1 and 2 teams in the NHL and the defending Cup champions in that order to get there. What, exactly is not entertaining about watching a run like that?

                  Re: The realignment cometh

                  That's what I'm saying!

The season is a marathon and it's all about positioning yourself for the big dance. Once you get there, it's anyone's game.

There's a reason there's a regular season champion (President's Trophy, which no one really cares about) and a post season champion (Stanley Cup).

Get it done when it matters! The series are long enough that the better team should always win. And the best teams will emerge over a 2 month long playoffs, 4 series worth of 7 games.

But people, fans, teams, players, executives, will always find something to bitch about. I say shutup and let your play do the talking. If you're not a Top 4 team in your division, you don't deserve a luxury of getting in over a weaker team from another division that did finish Top 4. Sorry, tough beans.

Of that entire Minnesota run, I most remember Game 6 against St. Louis. A North Star D-man got hurt. Mark Tinordi played 17 minutes in the 3rd period.

Don't understand. More travel? I thought this whole thing cut DOWN on the travel... that was the whole point, right?

Yup, NHLPA has their heads up their asses. This is a joke league anyway. The NHL is stuck in the past on a lot of issues (but progressive/imaginative on others like the Winter Classic, All Star Fantasy Draft) and the union is just idiotic and is just trying to be a dick.

I would think most, if not all teams would have more travel because everyone is playing everyone both home and away. Even if you cut down on distance in division games, which wouldn't even happen in some cases, adding 6-7 road games against the other conference is a ton of travel for most teams. I hated the new setup, so I'm not sorry to see it go. I don't like that two division you only have to be in the top 4 out of 7 to make the playoffs and two other divisions, you have to be 4 out of the top 8. The unbalance makes it unfair IMO and that's the main reason I don't like it. They may as well wait until Phoenix moves anyway so they don't have to redo it again. They should at least not make Winnipeg play in the east next year. They can temporarily put Nashville in the Southeast, and then move one other team so Winnipeg can play with the other Canadian teams or Minnesota.
