You can't check a goalie regardless of where he is on the ice. He is not fair game outside the crease.
69.4 Contact Outside the Goal Crease - If an attacking player initiates any contact with a goalkeeper, other than incidental contact, while the goalkeeper is outside his goal crease, and a goal is scored, the goal will be disallowed.

A goalkeeper is not “fair game” just because he is outside the goal crease. The appropriate penalty should be assessed in every case where an attacking player makes unnecessary contact with the goalkeeper. However, incidental contact will be permitted when the goalkeeper is in the act of playing the puck outside his goal crease provided the attacking player has made a reasonable effort to avoid such unnecessary contact.
When a goalkeeper has played the puck outside of his crease and is then prevented from returning to his crease area due to the deliberate actions of an attacking player, such player may be penalized for goalkeeper interference. Similarly, the goalkeeper may be penalized, if by his actions outside of his crease he deliberately interferes with an attacking player who is attempting to play the puck or an opponent.

Correct. And the Lucic/Miller is incident is Example A of why this is in place. It'd be open warfare on goalies if they were "fair game" and there are only so many goalies to go around. It's also a reason why I think the trapezoid rule should stay.

I cannot....****ing...believe....Lucic didn't get ANYTHING for this.

The NHL wants to crack down on illegal hits. They want to crack down on repeat offenders. They want to prevent concussions and ensure player safety. So what do they do? Let one of the biggest bitches in the league get away from that without a suspension or a fine while the victim has a concussion. Then in the post-game you have Lucic smirking and **** like the smarmy punk he is. I think fans of the league will be very pissed that their players get suspended or disciplined for often much less under Shanahan, yet he can get away with this.

And **** our team for not doing anything in return. And now that there is no suspension,that game on November 23 will have ridiculous scrutiny from the league and nothing will happen. Pathetic.

I'm sorry, but this wasn't suspension worthy. I'm glad that Shanahan and the NHL didn't cave into pressure by The Sabres organization and their fans. With what a hot button topic concussions are these days- if this was even the least bit suspension worthy- Lucic would be sitting out tomorrow night.

Lucic was going full tilt for a loose puck, created off a turnover. It takes a hockey player only a few strides to be at full speed. His priorty on that play is gaining posession, and then creating a scoring chance.

As bad as the collision was, if he really wanted to let Miller have it, it would have been a lot worse. Lucic is a big boy, and Miller looks like a skeleton. If he was going for the hit(as opposed to puck posession) MIller would be crippled right now. Momentum carried him into Miller, its plain as day that he goes to his side.

I hope Miller is ok. I don't want to see anyone hurt. I am also very much looking forward to the rematch on the 23rd.

This ruling told me three things:

1. Goalies are open season.
2. The NHL wants players to police themselves.
3. Lucic has nude photo's of Bettman.

Let's see:
Lucic sucker-punches Tyler Myers with a closed-fist resulting in a concussion for Myers - $2500 fine.
In that same year, Ben Eager punched Colby Armstrong with a gloved-hand and received 4 games.
Lucic cross-checks Dominic Moore in the neck and receives nothing.
Danny Briere gets 2 games for cross-checking Frans Nielsen off a face-off.

I could go on an on about various Lucic infractions.
I like the guy. I do. But it's simply amazing what this guy can get away with.

Something must have changed Shanny's mind. You don't call the guy to an in-person meeting only to say "No harm done".
Very strange.

Patrick Kaleta's dirty *** headbutted someone a few days ago and the player didn't even REALIZE he was headbutted, and Kaleta got 4 games for being a repeat offender.

How the hell Milan Lucic hasn't been suspended is utterly shocking. He's like the Bruce Bowen of the NHL, I guess.

Incredibly disappointed and furious at the NHL for not suspending Lucic. It's, again, absolutely indefensible. Pathetic.

I loved Millers whack right after then his flopping to the ice like someone in the rafter sniped him. His comments afterwards scream out I'm only a goaltender because I'm a big puss.

Miller used to be a forward.

Maybe, but I expect them to disappoint me most of the time.

Before I could blame the Lightning's struggles this season on goal tending, and it's still terribly inconsistent but this game and Friday's game have just been a disappearing act on offense. We have no business getting shut out by anybody with the amount of offensive depth on the team. After all the success last year, I really expected more from them but it just isn't clicking this time around for some reason.

I don't know if we can make another playoff run until we find a permament solution at goalie, Roloson just isn't performing like he did last year.

And oh my god is he getting embarrassed out here. Freaking 4 goals in less than two periods from Winnipeg, unreal. At least it isn't another shut out though. St. Louis scored off a Vinny/Stamkos assist so at least my three favorite players on the team got some points out of this fiasco.
