Re: The Official 2012 Stanley Cup Playoffs Thread

I agree that Weber got off a lot easier than I was expecting. But one thing I haven't heard much talk about is Bertuzzi punching Gaustad in the face immediately following the Weber incident. If Weber had gotten suspended, I think Bertuzzi would have gotten a look from the league as well.

Just saw the Weber thing. Smh at the punishment. Also, who's idea was it to have the fines only able to go that high?

Collective bargaining. The NFL is by far the strongest league and the NFLPA is by far the weakest union in major professional sports.

I haven't seen it (Bertuzzi punch), but the head-slam is so damn barbaric it's comical. It's actually one of the most appalling things I've ever seen on an ice rink. If Zetterberg was hurt, it would've been the new Bertuzzi/Moore incident.

I'd say it's worse then the Chris Simon skate stomp, too. It takes a good amount of effort to take a guy's head, and then ram it into the glass. It was shocking.

NHL is ridiculous. Like Psyblast said, not worth watching. But damn it...

          NFL - Buffalo Bills
          MLB - Cincinnati Reds

My point in suggesting had it been Crosby it might have been a more severe penalty is that given his history of concussions and the sensitivity regarding his long absences due to said injuries (along with the fact that he's basically the only crossover star in the league and poster-boy for the NHL), the league would almost certainly have reacted more sternly. The fact that it was a guy without a similar head injury history, as well as not a guy the average non-hockey-watching public knows, almost certainly factored into the non-suspension decision.
Maybe. But the league seems pretty cavalier about Crosby's health as well. Crosby wasn't injured because of a dirty hit, he was hurt because of Steckel's rock hard shoulder pads. If players didn't have armoured shoulder and elbow pads, there would be far fewer concussions. What exactly has the league done to address this? The same as the players: nothing.

If Crosby had been injured, yes. If not, I doubt it.

That may be true, but he is thus far not doing a very good job in my opinion. I don't know the behind-the-scenes machinations, I just know the wheel of justice seems to be in full effect...

We also have to remember Brendan Shanahan said each playoff series is like an entire season. So in order for him to justify a 1 game suspension he has to decide if it would be worth 12 games in the regular season. It's ridiculous that they go about it this way, but it's what they do.

Doubt it. That would remind ESPN audiences that the NHL exists.

The NHL knows that any negative MSM attention they get is fleeting. If they really cared, Bertuzzi would've been banned for life, and fighting itself would probably have been phased out of the game by now. The NHL is run by and played by people who don't have much of a problem with what Weber did.

Yep. I love how that just came out of nowhere. A complete 180 from the rationale used for the Aaron Rome suspension. Pretty sure Rome wasn't getting 48 games if he'd laid out Horton during the regular season.

Looking forward to watching Ottawa tonight. Haven't seen many of their games. Also just hoping for some good games tonight. I have no bias in any of these series tonight. A night I can actually relax and enjoy hockey as the Kings are not playing.

It was the third story or something on PTI today, and it definitely got play early in the earlier Sportscenters. I mean, they did the whole "Rachel Nichols on Brett Favre's Lawn" treatment for when Crosby played his first game back this season, so stories involving the kid do get play in the States.

Regarding your second statement, I would have to agree.

Not sure what to make of this story:

While the Vancouver Canucks dropped their opening-round playoff game to Los Angeles, the Twitter universe was buzzing after a one-line message on the Kings' Twitter page.

I know there's sort of an East Coast - West Coast thing in Canada (similar to the U.S.), and pretty much everyone hates Quebec, but I didn't realize the 'Nucks were so disliked in Canada. I'd be interested to hear what our friends in the Great White North think (not necessarily about the tweet, which was stupid, but re: whether everyone outside BC hates the Canucks?)...
