Wings trade Stuart's rights to San Jose

Kinda figured we'd lose him, but hoped he'd come back anyway. Wings D is looking ugly right now, Suter should ask for the moon.

He's been gone for a while now. Completely mailed it in against Nashville. California Dreamin'.

There's a new rumor floating around that the Flyers are working on a deal to get Nash with JVR as the centerpiece, but JVR is purposely delaying his hip surgery so he can't be traded.

WHY FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THINGS are they trying to trade for this guy. GET A FREAKING DEFENSE.

Holland is sure picking up the conditional 7ths. Stuart, Commodore; it looks like in a few years we're gonna have some more Superstars.

Anyways, I imagine that Brendon Smith will take over on of the two spots on the top 4. Hopefully Babcock will staple his *** to the top 4 so he doesn't get Kindl'ed. The FA class of defenseman looks pretty good: Suter, Garrison, Carle, Wideman, Jackman plus a decent amount of 3rd pairing guys. Obviously it depends on who resigns, but after losing Rafalski and Lidstrom in back to back years, we really need to bring in a defenseman who can score and handle the puck well.

BOS agrees to terms with Chris Kelly on four-year, $12M deal and Gregory Campbell on three-year, $4.8M deal. AAVs of $3M and $1.6M.

            Great deals for Boston.

Yeah that doesn't make much sense, scoring is the least of your problems, and even Bryz can be solid (although he is way overpaid still) if you put a better defense in front of him.

Re: The Official NHL 2012 Off-Season Thread

So the current CBA expires on 9/15/12.

                Primary issues:

-- Supplementary discipline handed out by the league
                -- Realignment
-- Participation in the 2014 Winter Olympics
                -- And of course $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Currently the players are guaranteed 57 percent of hockey-related revenues. But with the NFL and NBA having just cut the players’ share in those two leagues, some believe NHL owners will attempt to do the same.

If that happens, expect the NHLPA, led by new chief Donald Fehr, to dig in.

Fortunately, there’s no guarantee it will come to that. The owners know the players surrendered a ton to end 2004-05 lockout by accepting a hard salary cap. And what of the countless press releases by the NHL trumpeting the league’s successes?

Sure, there are still struggling franchises. On the other hand, there are plenty that are extremely profitable. According to Forbes, the value of the Toronto Maple Leafs rose from $280 million in 2004 to $521 million in 2011.

In stark contrast, the NHL was claiming huge losses prior to the lockout that wiped away the 2004-05 season. Some franchises were saying they were better off going out of business than carrying on without cost certainty, aka a salary cap. Even the majority of fans agreed something had to be done.

We’re not hearing that sort of sabre rattling this time around.

Re: The Official NHL 2012 Off-Season Thread

                  Jets re-sign Jim Slater.

WINNIPEG -- The Winnipeg Jets have retained the services of centre Jim Slater, signing the centre to a three-year contract on Wednesday.

The 29-year-old native of Lapeer, Mich., played in a career-high 78 games for the Jets last season, scoring 13 goals and adding eight assists. He played for the United States at the 2012 IIHF World Hockey Championship.

Slater was set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

"I told my agent right from the beginning that Winnipeg was definitely tops of my list and if everything seemed to work out then that's the place I wanted to be," Slater said. "I think both sides were very, very fair in the dealings and it just worked out the way it did, and I'm glad it did."

Slater was drafted in the first round, 30th overall, by the Atlanta Thrashers in the 2002 NHL draft. He has 60 goals, 61 assists and 322 penalty minutes over 449 career games with the Atlanta/Winnipeg franchise.

He said loyalty between himself and the only NHL franchise he has ever played for was a significant factor in his decision to stay in Manitoba's capital.

"That was one of the biggest things for me going into contract negotiations," he said. "I have commitment in this organization and the Winnipeg Jets, and having them give me a three-year deal definitely shows commitment right back."

Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff praised Slater's work ethic, his faceoff skills and even the way he ensures he stays in condition after the season ends.

"We've talked a lot within the group with respect to the type of person that Jim is, what he brings to the table, his work ethic," said Cheveldayoff. "He's someone that we feel very, very comfortable about bringing into our fold on a longer-term basis. He showed the commitment to us. He could have taken his opportunity to go to free agent, which players covet, and we showed the commitment to him."

Cheveldayoff said they could have traded him last year at the trade deadline but decided he was too valuable and they would try to retain him.

"He's a true professional that works hard on his game on and off the ice."

Chris Stewart re-signed with Blues, 1yr 3M. Not sure if he fits with Hitchcock's system but we'll see. 15G/15A in a contract year, what a disappointment he was.

Apparently the Kings are making Parise their number one priority in the off-season. I highly doubt it will happen but I can dream of a top two lines consisting of:

                          Brown-Kopitar-Williams
                          Carter-Richards-Parise

                          NCAAF: Ohio State
                          NFL: Minnesota Vikings
                          MLB: Chicago Cubs

Re: The Official NHL 2012 Off-Season Thread

While there are a number of logical reasons why the Flyers would want to pursue Nashville defenseman Ryan Suter, who is headed for unrestricted free agency this summer, the question remains: Is Suter interested in them?

Recall the Flyers had serious interest in Jay Bouwmeester several summer ago, but it wasn’t reciprocal. As such, they turned their attentions elsewhere by going after Chris Pronger.

According to a well-placed source, Suter has a potential list of clubs he would be willing to talk to even if his rights were traded before July 1. Suter is represented by Neil Sheehy.

Alas, the Flyers are not one of them.

In fact, the source said, all of Suter’s preferred destinations, should he leave the Predators, are in the Western Conference – not the East.

Detroit is generally conceded to be his top choice.

It’s no secret the Flyers have some work ahead of them in the coming weeks to solidify their defense, especially given it appears Pronger’s status as “out indefinitely” with post-concussion syndrome will continue into next season.

Nashville general manager David Poile, the source said, has thus far refused to talk with any clubs about moving Suter or even restricted free agent Shea Weber’s rights right now.

Still, it’s likely that Poile will have to make some kind of move at or before the NHL draft next weekend rather than lose Suter to free agency.

What happens with this scenario could have a trickle-down effect on what the Flyers do in terms of re-signing Matt Carle, whose salary cap hit is expected to jump from $3.43 million to close to $5 million. The Flyers are hoping to re-sign Carle under the $5 million mark.

While a number of NHL clubs have their sights set on New Jersey forward Zach Parise, the winger said on Wednesday he was hoping to re-sign with the Devils.

Parise is unquestionably the top UFA forward potentially available this summer.

I could actually see both Suter and Parise to Minnesota.

Excuse me if this has been posted already, haven't read through the thread to find out.

Lou Nanne (MN hockey legend) said that the Wild are going to offer Zach Parise more money than any other NHL team. He heard this from the head of the organization, presumably owner Craig Leipold.

Whenever Nanne says anything regarding Minnesota hockey, most listen. He's about as plugged in as you can get.
