So the Capitals just don't commit penalties. Okay.

      Edit: okay....finally. Sort of.

Ya, but Mason out again. Emery held his ground, but got a lot of support. And they can't ride him the rest of the way.

We finally get a competent goalie and he can't stay on the ice. Figures.

Here's hoping the Leafs go Wade Redden on Clarkson. Guy looks like he won a "skate a shift with the Leafs" contest every game.

Clarkson has a NMC; the Leafs can't demote him. Even if they could, he would still count against the Leafs' cap. (The Redden/Huet loophole was closed in the last CBA.) Most of Clarkson's salary is in the form of bonus payments, so even if he's bought out, the Leafs are looking at a cap hit of 4.65M per season through 2019/20 (plus about 500K per season through 2024/25).

TLDR: There is no escape. This is the worst contract of all time.

Sell all guys, trade everybody on our team, play Clarkson on 1st line, add some more stupid contracts and suck for next 6 years. After that, all the bad luck should be gone, and Leafs should be able to win something.

Oh and don't sign UFA's from other teams for gazillion dollars, now even Crosby.

Damn. Your assessment of the contract is 100% correct considering the context of the Redden/Huet loophole now closed, and payment structure with big cap hit. I guess with how awful Clarkson is too.

The only way I can see Clarkson being moved is if the salary cap shoots up within the next few years (unlikely with the loonie tanking), and some team needs a boat anchor to reach the cap floor. Even then, the Leafs would have to sweeten the pot quite a bit.

But don't worry. Clarkson isn't the Leafs' real problem anyway. According to the ever-astute Toronto media, all they have to do is get rid of...

                        ...for presumably more Clarksons.

                          Weak Canadian dollar? Kessel's fault.

Also worth adding, Nonis was neck in neck with Tallon in giving Bolland a Clarkson-esque deal too.

Recent win/point streak has been fun and lit a fire under my lukewarm following of the NHL this year, but we're 9 points back of a playoff spot. Teams are gonna go in full blown "PLAY FOR THE POINT!!" mode soon, so I don't see us making up much ground unless we catch absolute fire.

I love Emery, but he's just a solid backup who can be exploited in a 7 game playoff series let alone carrying the load for the final 30 or so games. Good for a change of pace but not starter material at this point in his career.

Might be wise to shut Mason down and have him ready for next season. He's proven to be more then a one hit wonder, and we need him going forward to be really good because we're trapped by our cap management to not be flexible in filling out a better roster around him unless our prospects all pan out over the next few years or we rob a team blind. Next few games + Mason news will determine whether we continue to chase the playoffs or are sellers with the deadline a month away.
