I see he apologized by press release. Classic. I'm guessing someone from the league office vetted that statement, or told him it was necessary and it wouldn't surprise me if they wrote it. I don't think he had a moment of insight mere hours later.

You're right about the layup. He took a question that could have been easily answered by indicating all the protocols the Hawks now have in place and turned it into a PR nightmare. The bizarre thing is he must have known -- or should have known -- that question was coming.

The more I hear any owner in hockey speak, the more obvious it becomes as to why the league has such a disconnect from their fanbase.

We might see the world cup of hockey return in 2024......in February.

So it would basically be like the Olympic break, except for this tournament instead.

I can't believe we've had almost a generation of no true best on best international tournament.

I'm interested to see if players would be up for that. Sure, it's no different than if they went to the Olympics in the scheduling sense, but I wonder if guys would skip it or not. Or might we see guys more willing if they're paid/better insured than at an Olympics?

Maybe TNT/ESPN splits games? And hold each division in different cities (one in US, one in Canada), and then the playoffs in one or two final locations as well?

I like the idea of having it in February rather than the old World Cup dates in September. It just got buried beneath MLB and NFL in September. The sports calendar is pretty bleak in February.

Not sure how the owners are going to feel about potential injuries during that time frame though.

July might be the only other time of the year it would really be worth it from a schedule point of view (after NHL season is over, if someone does get injured, they still have time before training camp to recover, NBA is done, NFL not back yet, and MLB has all star break for a few days).

                  Must be trade deadline season.

Latest rumor I read, Kessel to the Leafs.

Expiring deal, and Leafs are already paying him anyways. Not sure if they could get Coyotes to pay half his remaining salary anyways.

The way the Leafs structured his deal, it had a big signing bonus, so Coyotes retaining 50% would mean only 500k they're on the hook for, but it would be a 3.4m cap hit the Leafs take on (in addition to the 1.2m hit they already have).

I wouldn't suppose the Coyotes would want Ritchie and Holl in the deal...

                    Montreal Lightning at it again.

Lacavalier hired for their front office, joining St.Louis who was hired as the coach before that.

It's so sad. And if they turn it into an all star tournament like last time they will just ruin it all again.

Teams like Switzerland, Germany, Denmark have good players now.

I really dislike the NHL management for this. I remember back in the nineties where we didn't have a real tournament between 91 and 96 and how bad that was. And now... It is 8 years since last we had a real national tournament (yes I don't count the allstar mess they made).

No surprise, but there won't be a Russia in IIHF events going forward. Belarus also out too.

I believe the first major event that will happen will be the world championships in Finland in May. The way the standings are, theres a chance the Caps might not be in the 2nd round, so a guy like Ovechkin would've been eligible for that team.

As it relates to the world juniors, they're scheduled to have it in the summer, I believe they're starting from scratch. Not sure who they have replacing Russia for that tournament, or if they'll just have 4 teams in the division, meaning all the teams in that division advance to the quarters and play 1 less game. The team who won the Division I to advance to the top group was...Belarus. So can't just prematurely promote a country in this case. Latvia finished 2nd if they did think to promote someone.

Leafs get Giordano from the Kraken

So their top 4 if healthy would be Rielly,Muzzin,Brodie,Giordano.

A nice top 4 for 4-7 games in May.

Blackwell is not a bad depth pickup either.

That trade did allow Vancouver to essentially turn Hamonic into Dermott, which is a win for them.

Would have thought that Detroit could have gotten more than a 7th for Stecher, but I suppose injuries scuttled any chance of that. Greiss, Leddy, Staal, Gagner and Namestnikov are other rentals that should be available.

EDIT: Leddy w/ 50% cap retained and minor league fodder in Witkowski off to St. Louis for a 2nd, Sundqvist and Walman. We got our 2nd back for what we gave up for Leddy and have a few interesting young-ish, cost controlled guys to look at for the rest of the season in Sundqvist and Walman.

                                This could be awkward.

Ducks dealt Moore and Kesslers contract to Vegas for Dadonov and a conditional 2nd.

Trade is on hold due to Dadonovs no trade list supposedly not being submitted on time/Ducks might have been on that list (although if they were, I'm sure he waived it anyways).

So if the deal doesn't happen, Vegas has a guy who would've allowed the deal to go through to go elsewhere, and Moore would still be on the team who wanted to package him with a contract to dump it.

Similarly, Leafs and Hawks discussed MAF to the Leafs. Seems the full deal got leaked (Leafs rejected the deal), now the Leafs are mad at the Hawks for someone on their side leaking it. Puts Leafs in awkward position too given they waived Mrazek, the goalie they signed got claimed on waivers (he had to pass before being signed) and then actual reports (not just rumors) come out that they were looking for a new starter.
