Flyers with 2 Gordie Howe hat tricks (Weal and Simmonds) in the 1st period already. Man..... would love to see them sneak in, but such a long shot.

....and this kid celebrating how hot they were that period....

Alex Stalock looked really solid. Might as well play him again on Saturday.

Flyers not sneaking in. 6pts back,2 teams ahead, 5 games left? No way.

But speaking of playoffs, Leafs win again! Beating Nashville in Nashville! Matthews gets go ahead goal in city he probably doesn't entirely like since he hates country music.

Still 1pt up on Boston, but game in hand. 4 up on Tampa, both with 6 games left, but Tampa needs to finish a point better due to ROW tiebreaker. So basically Leafs beating Tampa next week all but clinches playoffs. And even crazier, they are 2 back of Sens for 2nd in division!

Crazier things have happened, but yeah pretty much.

Then again, our old friends the Bruins have that spot at the moment. So we basically have them right where we want them. LOL

It's all for the right to lose in the first round anyway. Usually I'm big on a hot team going in to the playoffs, but after going in hot last year and looking completely inept against Washington, I think the top seeds are just too good to upset. You basically need a goalie to steal a whole series. Neuvirth tried last year, fell short. Had no business getting to Game 6 against the Caps.
          NHL - Philadelphia Flyers
          NFL - Buffalo Bills
          MLB - Cincinnati Reds

For Flyers it might be right to lose in 1st round, but for Leafs,Bruins, Lightning, there's still shot of finishing in one of the 2 division spots left, which is the most favorable spot to finish in.

Can't believe though Leafs have 6 games left and really just 2 wins could get them in playoffs. Even 1-4-1 finish has a small shot. 6+ points gets them the Atlantic Division spot.

Well for us it's kinda easy since the Twins will be out of contention before the playoff are even done.

Re: The Official 2016-17 Regular Season Talk Thread

What a crazy year for the NHL. Wings/Kings out of playoffs, Oilers and possibly Leafs in. McDavid for MVP? Matthews for ROY? McDavid/Matthews could be the next Crosby/Ovechkin(especially with Canadian media hyping them up 24/7). Matthews might finish 2nd in the NHL in goals. Not among rookies, among everyone! Might even be 1st if you take away EN goals.

                    Atlantic Division is now:
                    2.Leafs-91pts(37ROW),5GR
                    3.Sens-91pts(36ROW),5GR
                    4.Bruins-90pts(40ROW),4GR
                    5.Lightning-86pts(34ROW),5GR

Canes,Flyers,Islanders at this point are all but out(Canes/Islanders finish with max of 94,Flyers max of 92). Even Tampa at this point, best finish is 96pts(still have to play Bruins,Leafs,Habs) so they're probably out.

Flyers all but eliminated today in one of worst ways possible. Neuvirth collapses out of nowhere right before a faceoff occurs. Gets stretchered out of the game.

The balance the NHL must always weigh is between skill and the ability to deter or impede offence. Do they want to allow Gaudreau and his like to do their thing, or do they want to give players the opportunity to slow them down? Offence sells tickets and defence wins games. It’s the yin and yang of the NHL.
Why can't games be won by skill? Why is defense favoured over everything else in the game?

I love the NHL where everything has to be fair.
"But my team isn't as talented as theirs. My less-skilled players should be given opportunities to compete, even if it is less talented. This includes having the officials ignore the rulebook in order to allow me to compete on an even playing field".

                      NHL logic:
Employee: Boss, I'm really good at my job, but every now and then, when working at my desk, Tim runs over and bashes my hands with a baseball bat, breaking my hands and not allowing me to do my job.

Boss: I know Blaine. But here's the thing; you're smarter, more educated and better at your job than Tim. And we don't think that's fair.
So we're going to allow Tim to injure you whenever he wants so he has equal opportunity to succeed.

Hey, it only makes sense that the NHL would be cautious. After all, the NFL and NBA made conscious efforts to emphasize offence, and they lost billions of dollars and millions of fans as a result.

                        Am I doing this right?

I've said it before, if NHL wants to market themselves better, they need more offense. NBA and NFL it's easy to market the big name guys because you know every game they're in, they'll be part of the game on offense and scoring points.

In NHL,players rarely even average a point per game. You might see the teams top scorer average a goal every 2-3 games. That's what's hurt baseball in marketing guys too is that you might see a star player reach base 1-2 times a game on average. Though in MLBs case, there's no changing it. NHL you can at least improve on things. It's only been this way since Bettman has taken over. This is currently the lowest scoring era in NHL since the 50s.

Look how much more interesting things are when you can see someone like McDavid closing in on 100 points, a rookie like Matthews possibly a 40 goal scorer.

I agree. The Olympics are like a marketing campaign for the NHL. Gotta put some money in to get something out. Instead, they'll just sit out and wonder why hockey isn't growing in the US.

In the end, the fans get screwed. I have no interest in the Olympics now. The hockey pulls me in and gives me a reason to check out the other events. Now, there's no spark to ignite the flame.

Yes, that was a corny Olympics joke.

Any chance this changes? I feel like part of it is the NHL doesn't want to bow down to the IOC. If they come to the table, does the NHL listen? Gotta think the pressure will heat up as the Games approach.
