All US vs. Canadian games postponed up to the holiday break, and an announcement about whether Olympic participation will happen in a few days.

I don't see them resuming this year (aka in December). You don't just cancel all those games and suddenly the next day resume.

January 1 being the resuming date, with December 27th being the start of a mini training camp for teams? That's what I'd do if they're even able to.

I disagree. There are protocols about whether a game gets played or not in place. Follow them. Obviously the international travel throws a wrench in, but it makes no sense and only adds to the nightmare of rescheduling to cancel games for no reason.

NHL officially pauses the season starting on Wednesday.

The current plan is to resume on Monday the 27th.

The no Olympics will at least help with rescheduling.

I wonder who ends up being on the Olympic team now on that short notice. Will be tough for whatever players get selected in deciding between a once in a lifetime opportunity and staying safe.

The border is going to be a huge problem. You test positive in the USA, good luck in getting back into Canada and vice-versa. Given that there's capacity limits in almost all the Canadian cities, I think there's a strong possibility the Canadian teams end up playing home games, maybe even relocating to the USA, before the season ends much like the MLS Canadian teams did in 2020. Like you I don't think there's a need for another league-wide pause in the season (unless hospitalizations soar in North America and then all bets are off).

I'm not doing anything in February, and I got a buddy who can lend me some skates and a stick. Just sayin'.....

In all seriousness, do they just cancel the tournament at this point? The fundamental reasons for pulling out - ostensibly the rising case load worldwide - would be the same for any potential replacement players (e.g. college players).

The IOC wouldn't care about that, they'd just want the event to go regardless.

It's a shame they can't have hockey at the summer games though. I know hockey is a winter sport and all, but I'd imagine it would be more successful in the summer with NHL being much more willing to go for an August tournament.

It's the NHL having problems. Not IOC.
Fitting that NHL started cancelling games just in time to be able to back out of the agreement. Not that I think it was planned but still...

It's a shame we haven't had a real national team tournament for years though imo.

But the point is that even if it's not safe to do so, or you're rushing almost last minute to put together some teams, the IOC won't care, they just want the event to go on regardless.

For the same reason the NHL plays on. Money. Nobody wants to loose money.

I'm pretty sure that if the event had been in north america or europe they could have let the players go.

It's also the quarantine rules in china if you do end up testing positive. I think there was a one or two week isolation rule which means NHL could end up with a bunch of players not getting back home on time and being depressed by two weeks of total isolation. This was why Lehner declared early that he would not go.

I'm sad we didn't get this tournament. I'm actually more pumped for the junior championships now.

                            Mondays games already postponed leaguewide.

Now Leafs/Pens on Wednesday looks like it could be off too.

Next scheduled game for Leafs is January 1st vs Sens. Should they play then, it would be almost 3 weeks in between games!

NHL postponing even more games now.

Habs likely aren't ever gonna be allowed playing at home if no fans are present.

                                Cool world.
