The conclusion you keep hinting at that fans only root for him (sorry - Rory) because the media tells them to. Sorry if that’s a reach but certainly seems to be what irks you about him.

By him I meant Rory and no I didn’t mean placate. The word was gravitate lol.

I thought questioning someone how they know they don’t like Reed simply because they don’t know him and thus can’t fairly determine if they like him or not when in the same thread you’re talking about how Bryson is more likable than Rory. How do you know? Do you know either of them?


Rory was well liked before he was widely known or popular because chicks dig the long ball. He was hitting the ball a mile with every club before 330 yard drives before it was commonplace.

Because of that, he gained popularity and seemed easy to like and the media welcomed it. No one will ever be Tiger but they are dying for someone that will make casual fans tune into the RBC heritage to watch again.


When you said you find Bryson more likable than Rory, that, to me is saying that Rory in general is dislikable (at least to you, compared to Bryson). And that’s fine.

I guess where I differ from you is you feel the media was (unfairly maybe? Or unprofessionally) pulling for Rory.

I’d argue they weren’t pulling for Rory, they were pulling for the Grand Slam and would have handled the coverage for any golfer the same.



Would you have rooted against any golfer going for the grand slam assuming the coverage was the same?

No problem, kehlis - I followed your post just fine! While I have some (mild) disagreement with some of your interpretations of my comments, I understand your POV and appreciate your response.

"The media" has *always* been in the business of telling people who to cheer for and what is "good for the game", regardless of sport.

And this has *always* been a negative, IMO.

It's just odd timing to play the "Actually Rory is the bad guy" card.

Would you care to point out where and when I stated that Rory was a "bad guy"?

Is someone becoming the 6th golfer EVER in modern history to win the Career Grand Slam not "good for the game"? Is Rory finally winning another major after 11 years not "good for the game"?

It's certainly good for Rory.

You didn't have an issue with Jon Rahm being shoved down our throats for a couple years, followed by Scottie Scheffler?

Well, in a world where only one golfer in modern day has moved the needle, Rory is the closest thing to being the second one who has. You are in the extreme minority of people who don't like Rory. Rory, despite being an all time great, had evolved into this underdog story if you will, due to his long standing inability to win a major and subsequent heartbreak for some of them as well.


Being someone who works on the equipment side of the industry, there are only a few golfers that any casual fan/non-hardcore fan have a clue what they have in the bag. Rory is one of those players where people were well aware of what clubs he plays. People are well aware of him still playing Qi10 over Qi35. People knew about when he was a free agent and was testing Callaway drivers and picked up a ton of ball speed. People knew about when he tested Tensei Orange counterbalanced shafts.



Eldrick Tont Woods is the biggest player ever, and people are most aware of what he has ever done equipment wise. Rory is a close second. The only one on their level is Bryson, because he does such obscure stuff, that is a literal nightmare for any fitter/club salesman anywhere.



Late night after bar ramblings. But Rory actually moves the needle to an extent. In a world where only one ever has. That is inarguable. You don't have to like him, but you can't deny his draw for the game of golf. The royal mail in the UK actually has a congratulations to him on it currently. It has nothing to do with the media. He is a legend. He is undeniable in terms of his draw, sans media hype, that's just a fact.


He helps my job out, when many golfers do not. It's not an opinion, it's a fact.

Is 'extreme' minority <20%? <15%? This is unquantifiable and seemingly an overly-strong statement of opinion. I'm certainly in the minority on this forum, that's for certain!

I've been playing golf most of my life and have many friends and colleagues that are in the same boat; I have no idea what you're talking about with re: to Qi10 or whatever. No one I play golf with has any idea what Rory (or anyone else) is playing, other than perhaps (at best) knowing he plays TaylorMade stuff. It literally never comes up and no one I know cares what equipment pros play. Most of us are just worried about our own swing (flaws).

I have no doubt that the people that you interact with on a day-to-day basis know all about all of this stuff, but 'Tensei Orange' counterbalanced whatever has never passed the minds or lips of anyone I've ever played with.

It's not being contrarian to say that your experience is generalizable only to your experience. I'm not arguing just to argue, I've made actual points in good faith (whether you agree with them or not), so I don't necessarily agree with or appreciate them being dismissed as simply contrarian.

But since your contention is "everyone I know agrees with me, so I'm right", then I suppose I would agree that's the end of the usefulness of this discussion.

Harris English has won 5 times on tour, including this season's Farmers Insurance Open. He was on the 2021 Ryder Cup team, as well. Kind of one of those guys that's always hanging around the leaderboard, and picks up a win here and there.

Yeah, kind of a boring event overall because of the lack of drama/competition at the end. Reminds me of the Tiger days when he would just lap the field. DeChambeau is just missing that little element (short iron/wedge control and putting, I think) otherwise he'd be winning everything in sight, and Rahm seems to be working his way back from a slump. Hopefully the rest of the majors this summer provide some more interest than the PGA.

Saw Patrick Reed hit an Albatross today, I'll be honest, every time this comes up I have to remind myself that somehow an albatross is more difficult than a hole in one. After I refresh my brain, of course it's more difficult lol

This dude made some crazy putts in the end. It was weird, like he stumbled out of the gate, fell way behind, then storms hit, he regroups and starts putting his *** off. I'm unfamiliar with Spaun, he's never finished top 20 in any major ever, but it's like he's the guy who knows how to respond to a bloated course, kudos to him, man , that was an amazing final few holes

I'm glad the US Open finally had a real US Open setup; in my opinion, the US Open winner should be Even Par (or even +1 or +2). Congrats to JJ - no one benefitted more from that rain delay than JJ, and he took full advantage. Birdies on the 71st and 72nd holes to win is studly (yeah, I know he didn't need the one on 18 but finishing with a flourish is always appreciated). Love to see guys that have been through the ringer but hang in there and finally get paid off for their blood, sweat, and tears. Won one for the underdogs.
