Re: The Golf Club 2 - Impressions Thread

This game absolutely NAILS the feeling of hitting a perfect shot with the right tempo and swing speed. I was actually a pretty big proponent of the 3-click method, which I still like, but there really is nothing like connecting on a perfect 8 iron and plopping the ball down 3 feet from the pin.

I still think putting is a little wonky. Like the first edition of the game, I had a very long putt that I CRANKED that only made it halfway to the cup. I'm not really sure what I did wrong as I don't know how to hit it any harder. And the "putting on a glass surface" feeling is back for far too many short and midrange putts.

All and all, I really love the swing mechanics and am certain this game will keep me entertained for a good long time. I feel like this is usually pretty corny to say when it comes to sports games, but I think knowing how to swing a golf club really helps when it comes to tempo. And I'm only on player's clubs!

I think a patch is going to be needed. Especially for medium fast to fast greens. I can literally just tap the ball and it goes 20 feet. This is frustrating trying to read 15 footers or less

Having same issue w/putting on normal backswing....putter head jumps back and when I tap ball....20+ feet...even when I am 3" from cup!! Only adjustment I made for now is the SLOWEST minor movement for backswing to make sure it doesn't "jump"??

I actually think they really nailed the short game this year. I felt the same way as the few posts above me about how sensitive it was, but I've spent about 30 minutes on the putting green and it's really helped me not make those overhits.

You also have to force yourself to lag instead of going for the birdie on every hole, like the pros. You learn to pick and choose your battles.

Remember that it's not just the power of the swing, it's also where your reticle is aiming overall. Combined with the straightness of the follow-through and you can make some great long puts.

Long putts I am having less of an issue. It's 5-10 footers with a slight break. Putts that should be a high percentage 1 putt. Not 100% but at least 50 as opposed to 10.

In a way, I do agree with this. I get it that fast greens are supposed to be tough. I feel like in TGC2 they're not just tough though, they're ridiculous and unrealistic to a degree. Especially if there's some break to them, and I find some of the greens, even in the official courses just have some ridiculously sloped greens. Again, I enjoy the challenge, but I still want to feel like I'm experiencing real golf conditions. I find that frustrating about created courses too, some of the greens people come up with, and pin placements are just... ridiculous. That's to be expected though I guess.

The difference though between slow, medium and fast greens is a bit too spread out IMO. I've got a comfort zone when it comes to my putting stroke, which can safely, on a flat medium speed green get me 10 feet or so. I use that "visual marker" of my swing to guage my putts most of the time, of course with adjustments for elevation and such. However if you reenact that swing on the other speeds the effect is just over magnified IMO. Plus, hitting a fast green with an iron shot, the roll is just insane. Even with a short iron that should stick, rolls a good 20 feet sometimes.

I do feel like it should be toned down a bit, not to dumb down the challenge, I like that about this game, but to make it at least seem a bit more realistic. The same goes for bounces on fairways with elevation changes. I hit a drive this morning and it's first bounce hit on a bit of a side slope and my ball essentially took about a 75 degree angle turn to the right which knocked me from the left side of the fairway to the rough on the right? That's a bit extreme, it must have been about 30 or so yards offline from the bounce alone, then the extra bounces and roll afterwards made it worse. I get there should be some effect there, but that's just too extreme. It's odd too, because it seems random, some slopes it's slight, some its just too dramatic and unrealistic for me.

Also, with respect to people talking about their shots going offline with perfect tempo, and a straight swing path being shown, are you also paying attention to your lie? For example, if you're not hitting your shots from the fairway/rough on perfectly flat terrain, you can expect your shots to be offline, even if you have perfect tempo and a straight swing path.

Sounds like we're all fairly experienced golf gamers here, but I just wonder if maybe some are missing that aspect of it when they're seeing some of these things.

                Again, just a thought..

Re: The Golf Club 2 - Impressions Thread

So it is live in the UK now. I have decided to pick this up on the basis that the quality of the Golf itself outweighs the server issues at the moment - they will settle down within a week I expect.

So need to decide between X1 and PS4. Has anybody compared the two in terms of graphics and smoothness ? I do have an X1 and PS4 Pro now but will get an Xbox One X in Nov/Dec and if I buy on X1 now it will be there for it. On the other hand if it's better on PS4 now then I have 6 months of fun before then. I probably prefer the X1 controller slightly as I prefer the position of the left stick and find it isn't so sensitive as it's a touch looser. I was better at Rory on X1 rather than PS4.

That said PS4 community is likely to be bigger initially and everybody has to use the DS4 so it is a level playing field.

                  Cheers

I have the PS4 Pro also. Playability is good, other than issues most of us are experiencing due to server issues and swing control....i would but it now for PS4, trade it in or buy a cheaper copy in Nov for the XBOX1 when you get it.

I'd second this but wait and see for sure if Xbox One X is going to be any different. My guess is it'll be exactly the same.

On the putting issue, I agree that the breaks, coupled with the speed of the green, causes some unrealistic putting. There are some pretty short (within 10 feet) putts that I have to aim waaaaay to the right or left to compensate for the break. And given the speeds of the green, trying to hit through a break is very inadvisable.

Essentially, the greens in this game feel like tough PGA Tour greens. That's okay, I guess, but I'd rather they acted like regular old country club/public course greens, since that's the feel the rest of the course (and game!) has.

Also, was great to play 2 rounds real fast at midnight last night. I can't get an idea of how good or bad I am though, first game I shot 1 over par, second game I shot 19 over par, LOL.

I probably won't play until tomorrow and hopefully the game is playable..

One big thing I've noticed that annoyed the heck out of me in the tgc1. That's now in TGC2. The ball has spin!! Especially irons. Very noticalble I can go for the flag and not have it run off the green or take roll into consideration.

Updating my previous post: deleting the 4th hole fixed the glitched pin position. Deleting the 2nd hole didn't do anything; luckily, though, it can be resolved. If anyone else runs into this problem, that's the solution.

Course is now updated for TGC2 and published. If anyone is interested in playing it, search Cherrytop Springs CC.

As for the gameplay, I think the improvements overall are quite welcome. Even in the original, though, making any surface play at faster speeds turned them into wooden tables. I had been working on a different course and had the speeds turned up, and realized unless you made extremely large greens, it was essentially impossible to control. I think they got a little too loose with the friction values.

I assume they will keep working on these things and we'll get patches at some point.
