If 2K/HB keep making their game for last and new generation consoles, and be the only one for PC, they will be doing okay with their unlimited courses with the designer. It looks like EA is making their games for new generation consoles only.

As I've been reading for years, lots of consumers couldn't care less about career mode, playing the same few courses over and over again. For those, and the TGC Tour guys, it's going to be 2K/HB game. If you want the PGA career mode experience, it's going to be the EA game. And some will buy any new golf games no matter who is making them.

I can suppose all I want which game will be better, but regardless, when it shakes out, I think it is likely only one of the games will continue on. I think 2K is smarter to wait for more consoles to launch, than to launch in a weak market, and then watch EA release in a much stronger one, with a larger install base.

Watch 2K’s game be Lego Tiger Woods Golf...

Lego tiger wooods…. I would be interested actually

This could turn into a very interesting game of chicken..

Imagine if 2k releases a game that's more of "another iteration" and isn't a particular leap forward (particularly graphically)...

...and then right on schedule, EA drops a bunch of videos/pics of the next gen jaw dropping game, loaded up with licensed golfers and courses/tournaments, coming "in a few more months"

I could see that. Good point.

2k doesn't dump Unity that is what it will be. I play the game on a basic PS4 and it doesn't look bad. I don't know how a course designer could be incorporated into a new engine. Not a designer so no idea here. The selling point for me has been the nearly unlimited choice of user created courses to play. 32 from EA would get old for me fairly soon.

Re: It now seems logical we will get PGA Tour 2k23 this year

The bread and butter of the 2K/Golf Club games is the course designer, which leads to essentially unlimited courses to play. They need to have it.

The bread and butter for EA likely will be playable real pros and the top courses/events in the world officially licensed. They need to have those to make an impact and draw in the "casuals", since the majors are what appeal to the non-diehard golf fans.

I think that's why I could see two golf games existing for a while. Each one offers something quite unique that the other game will not. I very much doubt EA's game will have a course designer, and we already know that EA's game is the exclusive home to all majors, plus courses like Augusta, St Andrews, Pebble Beach, etc.

The problem is...money. If both games are successful, I could see the PGA Tour offering an exclusive deal to the company that offers the most cash for it's rights...exactly like what happened with Madden/2K and the NFL. Then, POOF, one game is either completely gone or has to revert back to some kind of unlicensed game with no real courses and events that essentially becomes a very niche option.

Heck, there are already exclusive deals at play as we stand...since EA's game is the exclusive home to all four men's major tournaments, and 2K has an exclusive deal with Tiger Woods.

I agree that the course designer is the bread and butter of 2k, unlimited courses, etc. I would also say that 2k21 is the best ball physics and swing mechanics of any golf game in history. It's not perfect, but I love how challenging it is and it's not just button mashing and hitting perfect shots every time. I really, really hope they just leave that aspect of it alone, run with the current status of the swing timing after all of the updates, and focus on graphics, more real courses, fix the bugs in Career mode, etc.

At the end of the day, if somebody doesn't want to buy a new generation console, there will be only one choice. There are many still playing TW14 on PS3 because they never bought a PS4. I met another one about a month ago. And the new gen consoles are even more expensive then the PS4 and XBox one.

Re: It now seems logical we will get PGA Tour 2k23 this year

I have no doubt I'll buy each of these on launch day. I'm a golf game junkie. My gut feeling is that 2K will introduce 2K23 the week of the PGA Championship at Southern Hills... as in next week. I think it's going to still be using the Unity Engine, but I also think they'll have it built to optimize the Series X/S and PS5, which they only gave a little post release love for with a 60 Hz Vsync option in 2K21. They'll do this to keep the course designer as part of the package, which I think they'll have to include to compete.

I wish 2K would consider changing their swing mechanic such that the swing path determined hook/slick, while the tempo affected push/pull. It would make more sense to my senses, intuitively, if they would. I doubt this will happen though.

EA Sports PGA Golf will likely have a lot of TOUR trimmings and players that will make it more enjoyable offline. I'd like to have a career mode that made me want to play career or season mode again. If they'd be willing to give their "connected tournaments" (like they had in TW 14) another go, I think that would be a real boon for the game. Then again, they had nothing like it in Rory, so I'm having doubts they'd launch right into that with a new series right out of the gate.

My biggest hope for the EA game is that it has a swing interface with some proportional, intuitive analog feel to it. One that I can reconcile the shot result with what I felt in my tempo, acceleration, and swing path.

I don't play any video games the way I did a few years ago. The only reason I even got the PS4 was because it was on sale at Gamestop for $200 with a $50 gift card. There is no way at this point I would even consider a console upgrade for an EA entry.
I am OK with the way HB has handled the mechanics of the game not perfect but the best out there at least for me. EA will most likely put out a graphically superior game that plays like Rory. No thanks.

PGA23 is already confirmed to have new swing mechanic. I doubt it will play the same as Rory.

100% this...EA is taking a risk by making their game next-gen only, especially when there is a current, established golf series out there that offers PGA Tour licensing, and is available on last-gen consoles and PC.

Not to mention the fact that getting any next-gen console is extremely difficult and quite expensive. And with the companies not being able to meet consumer demand on next-gen consoles until at least next year, that is still going to be an issue as EA's game gets close to release. EA is going to have to blow everyone away with their pre-release marketing to get people on the fence interested, especially if that means basically selling an entire console that's super hard to find in the process. Tough task for a golf game!

I think the only thing to move that needle is …Augusta National.

I’m honestly not worried about next gen console availability nearly a year from now.

Xbox Series X is already pretty easy to get right now

Going next gen only is the right move.
By next year, the “next gen” is already a couple years old.

Way past time to ditch PS4/XB1 era at that point
