Anyone know -- is there a demo/trial you can do?

No there is not. You liked 21 at all you should get this game. A few graphic anomalies aside this game is much better than any golf game before. No sheet.

Am I wearing a tin foil hat, or does your swing get influenced toward major bunkers and water hazards? I felt this way in 2K21 too. I need to start being aware of this and compensate for it. Seems like my few very early or very late swings are into water.

First thing I do is use the scout camera, doesn’t matter how many times I’ve played the course. Tee boxes don’t always point right down the middle of the fairway. I tend to use backspin a lot too on a lot of my drives to prevent it rolling out into the rough our bunkers. Just a habit I’ve gotten into if that helps.

So I am liking the game despite it's flaws, but one newbie question I have is, do the clubs and shafts from the Pro shop actually make a difference as in the name brands or are they just cosmetic. The ones like Ben Hogan and etc?

The club brands are purely cosmetic. They only offer the "look" of the clubs. To add attributes to them, you need to add the club head, grip, and shaft "fittings".

Just played a career mode round, and Lydia Ko won by 4 shots. Totally ridiculous that LPGA players are in the FedEx cup.

Oh well. Still really liking the look and gameplay. I just wish the backswing and downswing wasn't so quick, it's like every tee shot feels like you're having to whip at the ball. I've gotten used to it but it would be good if they could slow the pace of the overall swing down just a bit.

                Positives:

-I'm playing in Quality mode on PS5 and it is buttery smooth. No lag or stutter at all. Not sure why others have mentioned problems with this
Pre the Day 1 patch, on PS4 anyway, the game was Hiccup City, with slow framerates all over the place. This was especially true when the ball was in the air. Swings were very jittery and you couldn't get any kind of tempo.

After the patch, the game plays much, much smoother. A lot closer to how 2K21 did. Still get some odd framerate drops here and there, but it was pretty bad before Friday's update.

Thus making you the first golfer in history (virtual or otherwise) to try to increase the spin of your drives. And I spent all that money on a new driver to reduce my spin by 500-750 RPM!!!

                  LOL (just giving you crap)

Just played a few more rounds, both career and 1v1 9 hole. The game is growing on me very quickly. Much better than the previous version.

I had my first playoff, in a 1v1 match, and it was presented much better than I was expecting. It *really* adds to the fun to be in a playoff (I lost lol).

Love the new swing timing and mechanics. Definitely harder, but more punishing when you make mistakes, not just in some "let's make the game harder" kind of way.

Also warming up the the Henni commentary, and especially the fact that it's obvious they have muted 3/4 of Rich Beam's lines, when he says goofy things repetitively. He's been downgraded to an occasional comment on a course or a particular hole, and the very occasional "putt is on the way". BIG improvement.

I'm hooked. Definitely a step up from 21, and will be played every day until EA comes out.

Are we able to play a local 1v1 (user vs cpu) match?

Right. Very disappointing. Why can't we play a local match against a CPU controlled pro, or generic golfer?

When he posted that question, I got curious and went in to see if if was still just play alone, or with a ghost ball in a solo local match. It's still just a ghost, or alone. Seems like it would be easy to program playing an offline local match with the pros, 1 on 1?

So after having the game now for a few days I can say that I really do like the game. I have had the game crash one time and the game has reset my settings and difficulty levels a couple of times. Lie Grid club shafts and grips fairly minor things.
I like the gameplay quite a bit but the way some of the courses play now is a bit overdone. I like the extended rollouts on putts and approach shots but if you play with anything more than moderate greens and moderate green speeds it can be a bit unrealistic.
I played most rounds on 21 green speed 163 moderate greens sometimes firm.
I am finding 23 plays most realistic at moderate greens and moderate green speeds. Fast greens at 155 feels quite a bit faster than 21 at 163 green speed. I would like a green speed somewhere between the current 135ish and 155. I am using the default ball and have not used any of the power ups.
Maybe some of you younger guys can play with the current concrete fast as glass greens but it is not for me. Let's see what the other guys can come up with next year.

Super fun game, 2k21 was really solid and this game is better.

                              Looking forward to cross play!

The shop is a joke, which is surprising for 2K considering I know they want people buying VC.
The same 2 year old Mizuno driver from the last game when they could have put in the 2022 model.
And where the hell are all the clothes? Like they made a point to show in one of the teasers that Jordan brand shoes would be in the game, so where are they???
