Awesome interview sir, thank you for getting much information and including a couple of my questions answered.

I am glad that they said 3-click should be added quickly. Love that it sounds as if that put a hearty effort into commentary, as it helps build immersion.

Ultimately there's a lot to like here. As with every game, the devs are having to make tradeoffs. I trust them when talking about the shot swing meter not feeling right, so I hope the shot type really helps avoid the "dial a distance" the old TW games had. My guess is the game will reward players who utilize shot types for specific situations.

Excited for this game. Ready for Spring, and ready for golf.

Advance shot shaping could be a game changer.
I know all will have their own opinions but a right diagonal takeaway for a draw & left for a fade would my choice. Problem is when you get to the short game if they default to straight back & through it takes away the challenge.

I wonder how complete the mouse swing experience will be, particularly as it relates to advanced shot shaping

            I'd guess not.

I'm sort of blown away the PS5 can't do 60fps to their standards
Ya this really surprises me and is a bummer. It will still look better than any golf game in history, but why not 60fps, even at 1080p? Hmmm

No weather is quite lame imo.
The other thing that concerns me is the putting.
I think 2k has nothing to worry about when it comes to that part of the game. I guess we will wait and see how the putting feels in the new game to make a real judgement though.
And I also want to see some raw unfiltered gameplay videos as well.
Can’t believe we won’t have weather… smfh at that!

No doubt it’s gonna look better, but if it doesn’t play better, then who cares.

This answer about why they stuck with a version of dial a distance is odd and frustrating to me.

Requiring distance be controlled through partial shots is something we considered and prototyped during the game’s development. However, one of the things we discovered through this experimentation is that it made distance control on short game shots like chips disproportionately difficult when compared to the rest of gameplay.

No such problem exists on the game I currently play (Perfect Golf), as the different shot types have different maxes and characteristics, but all the power control is done through the real time swing on controller or mouse.

The EA reply is mysterious to me…and doesn’t pass the sniff test fully.

Honestly it reads more like they didn’t have the time or budget to tackle this from a fresh perspective … again, frustrating as we’d heard indications of “all new swing!”

Did the finance department cut their strings in the one year delay period I wonder?

My one hope you’re is that within the range possible for a club you at least have to control that micro level of distance… But I’m not sure if that’s what they are saying here or are they saying that you will still be moving the arrow around to precisely control where the ball goes, even within the limits of a given club/shot type?

I don’t know… for me it just doesn’t feel like golf if the entire “game” is moving an arrow around and then basically hitting a full controller swing all the time.

                    - No weather -- that one really bums me out, particularly with how amazing that would look and how well it could be done on next-gen tech

Couple these with the FPS being capped at 30 on PS5 has really put a damper on desire to pick it up. Maybe I will take a look at it after release to see what is added, or if the price drops I will re-examine.

Like I said, I will wait before I judge the game, but I HAVE said before …. You can’t trust EA.
They have to prove it. And so far, it seems good but definitely not EPIC or great.

I want this game to be great dammit

I'll tone down my negativity at this point until more is learned about the swing..

I just really hate dial-a-distance aiming/power control -- and Perfect Golf has shown me how simple and easy to interact with and enjoyable to play something can be ... with no need at all for super hyper precise little arrows getting dragged around to control the actual distance of a club.. Just super weird

It reminds me of casino slot machines where they still have the "handle" to pull, but it really doesn't do anything or have any impact.

The "swing" can feel like that "fake slot machine handle" if most all of the outcome is about fiddling around with an aiming arrow all the time -- and in "zoom down the fairway" views no less (obviously totally unrealistic to real golf)

I was sort of prepared to hear that the PS5 and Series X weren't going to be coming in at 4K and 60 FPS, but I was really disappointed to learn that they didn't see fit to include a 1080p 60 FPS option, like they do in most of their other sports games. This just made my decision to go with the PC version, where Craig did confirm that there will be a 30 FPS, 60 FPS, and an unlocked option. This might be what finally pushes me over the edge to buy a VRR capable HDTV!

Maybe they do and they just haven't clarified that?

We've had that in these games since like ... the 1990s

I was really hoping that would be such a cool thing on next gen with how amazing it could look and how it could influence gameplay and really make things always very subtly different.

I guess "If it's in the game, it's in the game" isn't the EA slogan anymore..
I guess the rain would cause the framerate to dip below 30 fps. Looking forward to the Xbox Z and PS7 to get 60 fps consistently.

I'm still confused as to how much control of the rendering one has on console
I feel EA sports games don't have choices between performance mode or resolution mode, although someone could correct me if I'm wrong. So I wouldn't count on it. Plenty of other consoles game do have that tho.
